Hey all. Looking for a healthier alternative to soy sauce for one of my favorite dishes (brown rice + garlic + soy sausage). Trying to reduce sodium in my life and have heard some not so great things about soy sauce. Is there an alternative that might give me a similar taste but be better for my health?

I can't eat wheat products (soy sauce is FULL of wheat!), so I have a few alternatives. When I really want the taste of soy sauce, I use a wheat-free low-sodium tamari (it's a type of soy sauce that is processed differently). They sell it in a lot of places now. There is also a blend of toasted sesame seeds and chopped up nori (seaweed) that has that same sort of "meaty" rich flavor that works well with rice and veggies and a naturally salty flavor from the nori. You can get that at health food stores or Asian markets.

You can find lower(not low) soy sauces in the larger health food markets. "Braggs Liquid Aminos" is lower in sodium and has better ingredients. When you compare sodium content watch out for the serving size. Some sauces use teaspoons, some use tablespoons. |
