I used to do it a few years ago, and Im slowly getting back into it again. Here in Australia, there is mainstream advertising promting us to walk for 30 min everyday to stay healthy etc. Anyone here do skipping to stay fit, also, how many kJ do we burn for say 15min of skipping vs. 30min of walking? |

I tried out skipping for fitness, and found that 15 minutes of skipping is a whole lot harder then it looks in those movie montages. If you're interested though make sure to massage your calves afterwards to avoid that after workout stiffness. |

Jump roping or skipping rope (please don't say skipping!) is a very good aerobic workout. Along with it being one of the best aerobic workouts it also works your arms, chest and legs. I use to jump rope as one of my main aerobic exercises along with running and it was actually pretty fun. It helps with balance and coordination which helps in sports--thats why boxers do it. Once you get good at it you can double skip for a minute or more straight and you can really feel it. Just make sure not do the same jump over and over, do a variety so you legs don't get tired of the repetitive motions of one jump. So do movements like jumping side to side like a skier or back and forth, alternating legs etc. I don't jump rope as often anymore though because I've joined the crew rowing team and I would say rowing is the most demanding thing I've ever done physically and aerobically so I usually work on a rowing machine now. But definitely take jump roping for a try--I know I've read a study somewhere saying it was one of the highest if not the highest calorie burning aerobic exercise. Good luck! |

We use rope jumping for warming up in my karate class. It is really hard to to it for more than a few minutes without making a misstake! I bought a rope for home practice, but to tell you the truth, havent been using it much yet. Walking is one of the best general exercises around I think. Specially if you work in an office and drive to/from work in a car. You will need it. I also find that riding a bicycle is good. More fun than just walking. |

For my most frequent workouts, I have a chinup bar in one of my doorways, and I use it at least a couple times per day (not really going to failure, just having fun with it), and hang a jump rope off the chinup bar so whenever I walk by it, several times a day, I take it down and jump for a while. I started this to improve coordination for taekwondo, something else I practice most days. Other than that, I ride my bike to campus during the school year, and lift weights 2-3 times per week.
