although I enjoy reading studies of unconventional methods for treating illnesses I also like to read of personal experiences so if you guys could give me some unconventional methods for treating cold/flu symptoms I would appreciate it today I have been using my neti pot with a touch of salt I had a hot shower and have been drinking lots of cold drinks -alternating organic juices with fruit smoothies earlier I had some organic soup so anyone with some other ideas ? |

I'm so sorry you have the flu. That really sucks. I had it a few weeks ago. I went on vacation to Florida to visit my parents and I spent the whole first week there in bed with the flu. It was a real bummer. I didn't do anything special. I just got plenty of rest and drank lots of fluids. One of my father's good friends is an acupuncturist and he gave me some herbs to take. |

I didn't think of steam, saline rinse (neti pot), or healthy cold drinks to be unconventional to treat a head cold or congestion. These are the sort of things I think a good doctor might suggest. When I think of unconventional I think of healing crystals or magnetic bracelets. I personally don't reach for those sorts of things, but I know some people feel they help. I do what you do : steam, cold or hot compresses for sinus headaches, saline nasal spray or saline neti pot, eating right, cold or hot drinks for throat pain, listening to my body, & taking some decongestants if absolutely necessary. |

The key is to do something before you even get sick, like as soon as you have a slight hint such as a little tickle in your throat or anything else similar. Then you take a large amounts of an immune system supplement that contains echinacea, zinc, vitamin c, garlic, etc. Before I switched to raw, I stopped getting these illnesses. I credit it to probiotics, which strengthened my immune system. If I was around someone sick I would use that formula to further ensure I didn't get sick. Staying away from dairy, sugar and white flour is especially important during illness.

I used to get sick (cold/flu) at least 4 times a year. Then 3 years ago I became vegan and I never had any sort of symptom again. I guess I am lactose intolerant. What bothers me is that any doctor ever told me to try cutting dairy off of my diet. I mean, since half of the human population is lactose intolerant maybe they should know better. Instead they would just give me pills. I wonder why... |
