I know this sounds negative, but I tend to be a little suspicious of any health advice our federal government puts out. I visited the site. "Dairy" is now a required food group? That being said, I suspect your class follows standard textbooks which in turn follow the fed government's suggestions. Your teacher may penalize you if you take a stand against Federal government policy. So if you're going to disagree, do your homework and be able to explain why your diet is complete without the food pyramid. Keep in mind that their weight charts are for groups of people, not individuals. Maybe your metabolism is such that you don't need the extra 800 calories? If you are losing weight over time, you are not getting enough calories. If your weight is stable, you are getting enough calories. What is your activity level? General suggestion about eating: eat often. Constantly graze in small amounts. You can easily get a lot of calories, even on a raw or vegan diet, if you munch on things such as nuts, seeds, or avacados. |

I agree with funchy, weight charts are for groups, not individuals. Are you healthy? Do you feel energetic? Are you relatively happy with your body size? Is your blood sugar kept in check? If your answer is yes, then you probably don't need the extra calories. Honestly, if I ate 2000 calories per day I would gain weight as I don't excersize enough to burn off the excess. If you are still concerned, visit with your doctor. S/he knows your medical history, including monitoring your diabetes, and will be a great help in determining if you are under weight and what you should do to gain weight while eating healthy. |
