It is to my dismay that while "loosing weight" is "In" so as to speak, gaining weight to me happens to be a challenge. Last summer I peaked at 140 Lbs using creatine as advised by a friend, but realized it wasn't the sort of weight-gain I had aspired for. Belly rolls, combined with skinny chicken-legs and skinny forearms are a recipe for disaster and I'd like to correct the issue. I'm aware my genes have a lot to do with it (I'm Somalian), but neither my mom nor my dad are skinny. I stopped using creatine because I had lost my job and couldn't afford to keep buying creatine, and yup you guessed it, as quick as crackers most of that cell volume of water/body mass I had gained had vanished. Now, I don't work out- Nerve racking environment, so I tend to avoid gyms because of the cold stares I get from other members. At the same time I try stocking up foods with high protein and carbohydrates such as: eggs, fish, peanut butter, and what not, but that doesn't seem to be helping. Considering I'm 5/6 3/4 (Dang I wish I hit the 5'7 mark), my ideal weight would be that of 140 Lbs with a clear cut-toned body. Please provide me assistance as to the types of foods to eat, how many times I day I should eat, and If exercising should really be in my game plan If I want to see my goals accomplished. Looking to hearing from your advices, Thank you in advance. |

Why exactly do you want to gain weight? You may already be at a healthy weight. My advice would be to attempt to increase your muscle mass, and if you want to gain muscle mass instead of just getting fatter, you're going to need to overcome your fear of the gym. I don't know what it's like in Somalia, but I've never noticed anybody staring coldly at anyone else in a gym and to do so would generally be considered a faux-pau. It sounds like you're just reaching for an excuse not to go to a gym. If you absolutely can not attend a gym regularly, then invest in some home equipment. What you're going to want to do is read everything that you can about weight training and develop a program to suit your needs. Generally speaking, more reps with less weight will increase endurance, and less reps with more weight will build muscle mass. Your program may vary, but some staple lifts that you should include are deadlifts, bench presses, cleans, and squats. As far as diet goes, just try to eat a balanced diet and naturally eliminate as much junk food and whatnot as possible. You'd do well to perhaps consult a doctor or a dietician and discuss your diet and lifting program with them. I've seen people gain some weight just lifting and eating a balanced diet, but it doesn't hurt to consult a professional. e: Sorry, meant to say "gain" in the first sentence. Also, you mean "losing," not "loosing," which isn't a word. Last edited by Subscreet; 11-30-2008 at 06:41 AM. |

I think the better question is this: Why would one want to gain weight? And also, if one wants to go to the gym, why is one self-conscious about oneself about others? To answer your question about gaining muscle mass, you went about it the wrong way. Creatine only creates creatine phosphate, which in turn transforms into your ATPs for your muscles. This is energy! All creatine does is give you sufficient energy to go about the gym for extensive periods of time. This does not build body mass, it simply allows you to stay at the gym for longer periods of time, without tireing. Probably the best way to gain muscle weight is from taking protein. Eggs, peanuts, and all sorts of meat. But one must not forget to hydrate himself. Also, you can't have energy without fruits. So an all around diet of fruits/vegetables, meat, water... ect. Should give you sufficient nutriments. The only thing is muscle gain is a gradual process and you should not discourage yourself. |

Drink a gallon of milk every day, and workout 3-4 days per week, and you'll gain muscle along with fat. When you get off the milk, you'll lose most of that fat. Then you can train and eat to kill all the fat you want. And btw, 140 lbs at 5'7 is SKINNY. Going the anorexic route, imo. http://stronglifts.com//images/about-mehdi.jpg <- that guy weighs 75kg/165 lbs at 5'8". Imo, you should aim for that. You won't be skinny (trust me, 140lbs is skinny. You really don't want that), and you'll be strong. |

Okay when I say gain weight, I'm referring to getting somewhat buff. It definetly seems I'm going to have to hit the gym. I've been reading about workouts, types of workouts, and how many reps and what not to do a day and all sorts of advices while in the gym. Good avice from a user here (1st poster after mine) who mentioned to consult my dietician/doctor. I'll do just that. Wow I feel dumb right now, I'll consult them! yeah 155-165 Lbs would be awsome! Thanks guys! Off to a gym membership and an advice from a dietician I get! I'll try and post a picture here from "Before" and After pic if the sensitive eyes can handle that |
