Talking Gay Soy Products -- soy products will make you gay

Ha, such a joke: Gay Soy Products - BuzzFeed.

P.S. I am posting this here not to make fun of "gay" culture, but because there are a lot of veg*ans here and veg*ans tend to eat a lot of soy products.

Wow!

The misinformation in that article is astounding. Here's my favorite:

Quote:
In fetal development, the default is being female. All humans (even in old age) tend toward femininity. The main thing that keeps men from diverging into the female pattern is testosterone, and testosterone is suppressed by an excess of estrogen.
This guy doesn't know much about genetics, does he. Don't they teach the X/Y chromosome thing to grade schoolers these days? This guy obviously didn't catch up on that piece of data (or he's selectively ignoring it) which throws the entire rest of the article into suspicion.

Here's the fact I know and has steered me away from soy products. There is a component of soy protein that mimics estrogen. Not only that, most soy is genetically engineered, unless it's fermented, which is predominantly tempei and miso. Tofu is really bad for you. And it has no taste to boot. Soybean oil is not good for you either. Generally, it's best to avoid soy at all costs, unless you can get it fermented.

I think what the guy is refering to is that for the first 7 weeks the foetus is undifferentiated and only an examination of the chromosones can indicate the sex. The imput of androgenes triggers the basic organs to to differentiate into male organs.
A foetus with only one X chromosome and no hormonal triggering by the Y chromosome or an insensitivity to androgens will develop external feminine sex organs leading some to say that to get a male hormones must be added by the Y chromosome and the basic development of the foetus is feminine. Does that help clarify what he meant?

Wow, I never heard any of that before. It seemed like most places I've found claim nothing but health benefits from soy. And I've never heard that tofu is bad for you.

I just did some quick searching online and found this page which lists the concerns: WHFoods: Are there special concerns related to soy foods?

It mentions the genetic engineering and apparently poor preparation practices. However, it does mention that whole, traditionally prepared soy beans are still healthy. So I guess I now have one more thing to be careful of. Thanks for the info!

I think the only part you got remotely correct is that Tofu has little taste. Not only are there loads of research into the benefits of soy towards a healthy diet, but also there is a large population of people that have been eating soy for centuries and are one of the healthiest: the Japanese. Unless you have some sources to cite about tofu being "really bad for you," please don't make wild claims.

That very small paragraph that the link goes to makes a key point to me that has not been mentioned yet.

Regardless of whether drinking soy affects your sexual orientation (which I think is quite bizarre) - the most important thing to me is that soy - whether you believe the hype, good or bad (nobody seems to be indifferent to soy!) - the bottom line is that cows milk is a lot more scary health-wise.

It surprises me that whenever soy is mentioned there is always a reaction that soy is the root evil of all mankind. Yet I am sure there are far bigger evils out there...

Q: Who are the world's biggest consumers of soy, especially tofu?
A: The Chinese. That's 1.3 BILLION straight, healthy, horny, highly reproductive soy-eaters.

Based on that alone, I think soy is safe, and certainly won't turn you gay

What are you trying to defend? There's certainly no reason to consume soy.

none at all

If you're not yet acclimated to drinking WATER, then drink rice or almond milk.

McDonalds has served a billion of "straight, healthy, horny, highly reproductive" individuals as well ("Millons & Billons served"). Based on that *alone*, I wouldn't say McDonalds is actually safe.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm actually soy-fan. Folks can find stats to support either side. The key is nothing to excess.

In the large part, I do like Dr Mercola, but this is one of the few times I think he is talking out of his arse.

The great soy debate has been raging for years. In some cases the dairy council has written anti-soy propaganda because they were losing customers. And the soybean makers are no different.

Here is an article that was written for my magazine, VegFamily.com by Christa Novelli. She covers a lot of information and misinformation and presents a fair and unbiased view of soy.

Being Vegan and Eating Soy: Myths, Truths, and Everything in Between

Tofu may not be full of flavor in its natural form but it's really easy to flavor it up.

Soy in its whole form is obviously preferable to processed soy, as with any whole food that gets over processed.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Well, actually, I was telling some friends of mine about these claims, and then I pointed out how interesting it was because somehow you then have to reconcile that somehow being gay is a sinful choice to make but that it is somehow possible to become gay from birth.

from what i've read, the estrogen-like action of soy is several thousand times weaker than actual estrogen.

so, soy actually MODERATES a person's estrogen receptivity by binding with estrogen receptor sites, thus blocking those sites from being bound with actual estrogen, thus blocking the effects of estrogen in the body.

i do think it is important to stick with organic, non-GMO soybeans, and also to stick with real food (like tofu, soymilk, tempeh, edamame) instead of food dreamed up by some crazy guy in a lab coat.

I have eaten tofu and soy milk in moderation for more than 20+ year and that doesnt change my sexual orientation or shrink my brain .

BTW, there is nothing wrong and sinful by being a gay.
