Last night, I was watching the Biggest Loser finale. The winner lost 218 pounds in 8 months and won $250,000. It really got me thinking about my weight loss goal (I'm about 130 pounds overweight). Here was my question to myself: If someone told me that they would give me one million dollars if I weighed 180 pounds on July 1st, what would I do to achieve that goal? Or if the doctor told me that on July 1st I would die if I didn't weigh 180 pounds or less, what changes would I make? Would I stop eating the Christmas cookies? Would I get them out of the house? Would I actually get up and workout in the morning? Would I start working out 2 or possibly 3 times a day? What overwhelming force would I bring to make it happen? Then, I hit the next step. Why can't I do that now? Why can't I pretend that someone's going to give me a million dollars on July 1st and bring that overwhelming force to bear on this goal. Anyhow, just something I thought I'd share. Have a great day everyone! Godspeed, Ed |

| Motivate, but don't destroy yourself! Do the best you can. Because it only works when you really believe it. If you really believed it, wouldn't you tell all your friends and be excited about it? Act like it's really true. |

Hey, listen, if you want to lose over 100 pounds in less than a year, you're most likely going to have difficulty in getting all the way there, as 100 pounds is quite a lot of weight. You may take unorthodox ways to meet the deadline that could invariably hurt your health tremendously, like not eating at all, life-altering surgeries, and other crazy habits like laxative-dependence. I have never watched the Biggest Loser, nor do I ever plan on doing so. It seems like a show that does not tailor to people's real needs, but is just in it for the ratings. 218 pounds in 8 months cannot be considered healthy. I'm sure there was some sagging skin.

I think it's one of the NLP techniques that Tony Robbins teaches. Think of all good things that will happen if you loose all that weight and make a list, then think of all the bad thing that will happen if you DONT loose that weight and also make a list. All you have to do now is just look/remember that list before you eat another cookie |

well imagine this : A hostile gunman whips out his gun and press it to your head and says "Lose 130 pounds in 3 months or i'll shoot your brains out" Now ask yourself what you'll do in that situation. Will you Eat junk food? ( hell no! for me) turn vegetarian ? ( most likely for me) exercise everyday? (& be disciplined about it?) imagine the scenario and do what you'll do if you're in that situation, in fact if you procrastinate just imagine the scenario. |

I am the opposite I had to put on 154lbs of muscle, and belive me this was a lot harder than loosing fat. I exercise everyday, I eat healthier then you can believe and I do it for my work - because it is what I truly want to do in my life. I could not live my life any other way, I'd crack. What you are saying is "Please help me, my want isn't big enough" Make your want bigger, imagine yourself and all the good things you can have - girls, success, money, power, freedom, fame - don't be scared - what s it that you TRULY want if you can have anything? Then why aren't you getting it? I am, and if I can then so can you. |

| Ed, what a great question to ask! I don't think money is going to be a great motivator for you, because a) you would know that's you're pretending and b) even if you were going to be rewarded, what would keep the weight off afterwards? Money only represents the means people think they need to get what they really want. Why not go straight for the real, enduring stuff? How about finding a real reward that would inspire you? For instance, underneath your desire for the million bucks, perhaps you feel that your vitality, and therefore earning power, would be through the roof if you lived and ate clean? Then each time a cookie calls your name, you might ask yourself if it will add to or subtract from your vitality and continuing abundance? I'm not saying vitality is your dangling carrot, necessarily; but you might want to look at how exactly the extra weight is limiting you and what new inspiring possibility (overwhelming force!) you might want to create for yourself. |

Women are often a motivating factor in loosing weight - getting dates easily with attractive women - never being home alone when you don't want, never a boring saturday night by yourself. Find what works for you. |

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I particularly like this one. I guess one of the problems I have is in the idea of rewards being concrete rewards vs. abstract rewards. The kind of brain I have works a lot better with concrete things vs. abstract things. For example, I can imagine what it would feel like having $1 million. It's very measurable, it would be very tangible. However, the idea of having "more vitality" while I'm sure I would and I can "sort-of" imagine it, it's pretty hard for my brain to get its hands around. I can imagine all the things that I can do with more vitality, but yet it's still not a motivation for me. Hmmm... Sounds like something I need to think more about. What's really motivation for me, and what's not. But I guess the real point of this thread is about overwhelming force. The concept of how much effort would I put into something if I knew that there was a really, really big payoff at the end of the time. I've just been thinking more & more about the concept of Overwhelming Force and what it would take to really deal with this issue in my life in a quick and decisive manner. Anyhow, time to get to work. Thanks everyone for responding to my thread. | |

| Adding 154 pounds of muscle? On someone your size I can believe it. My dad was also a bodybuilder and at 6'4'' he'd be skinny (10% bodyfat) at 265 pounds. Having become a blackbelt in the '70s he sometimes wishes he'd gone into pro-wrestling too. It's good to see you making your size work for you.
