Default Is drinking blood really worth it?

Is it?

I know it has lots of protein and a good supply of red blood cells, but it tastes so icky and the butchers keep giving me weird looks whenever I ask them for their leftover blood!

The Natives of the Arctic regions, eat raw meat and blood.......they have to, to survive in the Arctic.

So based on that, Ceros I see your point.
Still, my cultural upbringing would have a slight problem with it.

I don't think it's worth it.

If you want a "blood transfusion", eat dark leafy greens in the form of a green smoothie. It contains a lot of chlorophyll in an easy to digest form without much chewing. Chlorophyll is very similar to hemoglobin. You don't need so much protein, not even to build muscle.

Where did you get the idea to drink blood? I'm very curious.

You need blood to become president.

Your problem is going to a random butcher. Asking a butcher for blood is like asking a painter for the water he used to rinse out the brushes. A butcher will always see the blood as a by-product, and therefore will fail to maintain the quality of the blood that you desire. His mindset is a wasteful one, where the blood is given no respect for the wonderful substance that it is. Unfortunately, he'll be unable to comprehend why you would want it, and he'll probably be giving you a mix of various bloods. This is not only more likely to cause disease (due to the lack of proper harvesting of the blood), but also likely to intermingle sweet cow blood with more poignant pig blood and even the more heady, light chicken blood. Truly a poor state of affairs to have such pleasant, distinct flavors muddied with this combination, no?

The better way to obtain these bloods is to obtain your own. You can easily and repeatedly bleed larger animals. A cow, for example, has 4.4 gallons of blood, and will not miss you savoring a pint now and then. Several delightful recipes exist for cow blood, which is one of the best of the types, in my opinion. One good recipe follows:
Quote:
Pour the fresh blood through a sieve to separate it from the clots. Mix three parts liquid blood to one part milk (or equal parts blood and sour milk). Cook over low heat, stirring often, for twenty to thirty minutes. The mixture should thicken like scrambled eggs. If desired, butter, fried chopped onions, or salt can be added during cooking. Serve with Ugali, Fufu, or boiled Plantains, or Rice.
If you have problems obtaining a cow, you should consider discussing some sort of a deal with farmers in the area. It goes without saying that fresher blood is far better than the stuff that has been lying around in butchers' buckets all day.

If you're truly a blood connoisseur, you should definitely take the time to hunt down some fresh shark blood. A bit pricey, but the second best blood you'll find anywhere. For the truly elite, there's nothing like the blood of a newborn human baby, preferably the rich and delectable cord blood. It is nearly impossible to obtain unless you bribe the right doctors and nurses. They'll insist on a pretty penny, but it is truly worth it. Such prized blood should be enjoyed as fresh as possible, uncooked or mixed, preferably with a nice, deep red Chianti.

you can contract all kinds of diseases from drinking blood....especially random animal blood. some examples are foot and mouth disease, mad cow disease, parasites, etc...basically whatever that animal was infected with, you can bet you will most likely contract.

why would you want that? there are so many other sources of nutrients out there. why put yourself at such enormous risk like that?

and in case you're drinking human blood, i would be most worried about aids and hepatitis.

Not a good idea (dangerous, useless w/ regard to red blood cells and proteins, yucky).

Might be interested in the film Delicatessen, though. ;-)

Cow blood is a delicacy among the Maasai tribe in Kenya.

They do cook it though, contrary to false reports out there.

BTW, if anyone is disgusted by the thought of consuming blood, I hope you don't eat any meat. Cuz all meat is full of blood ya know..........Hard to squeeze it all out when they murder the animal.

Your butcher must have never heard of blood sausage. You donīt feel quite like a vampire when you eat it, but it still tastes like ****.

Oh, and Midasgirl, donīt worry, all that teenage angst will dissipate in a couple of years.

I actually think blood sausage tastes great. Hard to find good ones though, the ones from supermarkets suck.

Eat red meat, cooked very rare.

After I cut my steaks, my plate is filled with blood and meat juices. I use rice or bread to soak it up and eat it.

It's delicious.

@Ceros, I had never thought of asking butchers for leftover blood, although my friend with an apparent red meat deficiency has often thought drinking blood might help him. Don't they bleed out an animal at the processing plant so there is very little blood in the meat by the time it comes to the supermarket? Can you really just go up to the meat counter and ask for blood? Do they charge for this?

@ThoughtAddict, you really had me going for a minute there...

Umm... even human blood the red blood cells wouldn't be any use to you. They first need to be digested, sent to your bone marrow, grown etc.

Yes, animal blood is nutrious. Black pudding with my Full English Breakfast is good. But very rich due to blood and fat. I only enjoy it rarely.

Pig blood is a delicacy in Chinese cuisine. They are made into a jelly texture and served in ice-cube-sized cube usually with noodles or other cow parts like stomach, liver, etc. However, nowadays, it is hard to find true pig blood even in China. Most use chicken blood instead because they are plentiful.

Try it when you are in HK. Its name translated literally is "pig red".
