Default The Dangers of Fruit

Quote:
Even so-called "natural" fruit sugar can aggravate "candida" conditions and it can be dangerous in diabetes, so we know that fruit has to be controlled in its consumption. Authorities are coming more and more to the conclusion that excess carbohydrate in the diet, sugars and starches which quickly convert to glucose are responsible for the cause of more than 80% of the most severe diseases - heart disease, blood vessel diseases, and cancer among a long list. There is no condition which is not affected adversely by an excess of sugar in the blood.
FRUIT - FRIEND OR FOE - Dr. Stanley Bass: My experiences with fruit

This was a very interesting read. Thought I'd like to share since there's a lot of fruit lovers (myself included) here

WOW. I dont understand how something natural that grows out of the Earth would be bad for you! How can that be?

That reminds me,I got this book a few years ago called The Fungus Link and it says only certain fruits should be eaten, because most of them have too much sugar which creates fungus in the body. Hmmph. Who knew! Next thing they'll be telling us vegetables have a downside too!

I call BS. Not on the OP but on the poorly documented article. You'd need to show me more information for me to condemn a food that is shown to have so many benefits.

Sugar from fruit will be just as bad as sugar from any other source, so it isn't obviously wrong. And lots of natural things aren't good for you. Try hemlock for instance.

But the original article does seem to be badly written and poorly researched.

The Article is a bit messy but the guy sure seems to know his stuff. And the whole site gives the same impression. Like youīve stumbled into the bombed lab of a mad scientist. Anyone read any of his books? I imagine they may not be as messy since heīs hopefully worked with an editor.

Well, the doctor (Dr. Christopher Gian-Cursio) on the article was on a strict grape diet for a month so it's reasonable to expect some kinds of nutrient deficiency to occur. Grape becomes a foe when you overeat it ( in replacement of other equally important food groups ).

Quote:
He told me about his experiences while following Arnold Ehret, which led to deficiencies in his diet. He once went on a grape cure, recommended by Johanna Brandt. He lived on nothing but grapes, cases of them for about 35 days. He ate pounds of them at each meal. By the 32nd day, his gum was bleeding, and his teeth loosened in their sockets. He said that one of his teeth fell out of his mouth. He exclaimed, "My God, I am detoxicating my teeth."

Authorities - God I hate that word...with a passion.

Moving on.....

Lets examine this quote.
fruit has to be controlled in its consumption

-- Not I....or anybody I know is eating 4 pounds of bananas a day. I, and I'm sure most sane people, KNOW how to eat moderate amounts of fruit a day.

So that throws that ridiculous comment out.

sugar and starches reponsible for 80 % of severe diseases.

--Lets factor in sugars from candy, sodas, cakes, and other souces of sugars NOT from fruit, shall we?
(To be fair, he may have said that in his book?)

80 % of severe diseases
-- No mention of breathing in highly Poisonous gases streaming 24 hours a day from our Buses, trucks, automobiles ?

Finally, we have an "Authority" telling us to restrict fruit consumption after being on a strict diet of only grapefruit.......

Hmmmmm...

The most important parts of grape are the skin and seed, which are rich in EFA (Mainly N-6), protein, minerals, powerful antioxidant and etc. Not the "sweet meat" as most people would like to believe. So, take the seed and skin, discard the sweet meat ( I'm kidding )

Grape Seed and Grape Skin Extracts Elicit a Greater Antiplatelet Effect When Used in Combination than When Used Individually in Dogs and Humans -- Shanmuganayagam et al. 132 (12): 3592 -- Journal of Nutrition

Grape seed

A Polyphenolic Fraction from Grape Seeds Causes Irreversible Growth Inhibition of Breast Carcinoma MDA-MB468 Cells by Inhibiting Mitogen-activated Protein Kinases Activation and Inducing G1 Arrest and Differentiation -- Agarwal et al. 6 (7): 2921 --

I donīt mean to be an ass, but assuming everybody else eats the way you do makes a pretty poor argument. Ever heard of fruitarians and raw foodists?

And I don't mean to be an ass right back to you, but being a "frutarian" is extremism........which is the point I was making about eating a pound of bananas.

And all this time I thought Poison Ivy Tea was good for calming my nerves. (j/k)

Many things eaten in moderation can be beneficial. Go over that and you're risking your body's health by over-stressing enzymes. But poisonous foods are still going to harm.

However, we may all be humans but we're certainly not made from cookie-cutters; those 'bad' fruits may turn out to be lifesavers for another person.

Just two random thoughts:

1) Except for certain areas on the planet, we don't live naturally in an environment enabling us to eat pounds and pounds of fruit every day. Now with modern transports, I can eat four pounds of bananas every day and strawberries in January if I wish, but that's not how it was planned, so to speak. I don't think eating fruit in the naturally available amount is bad.

2) Originally, fruit did not contain as much sugar as it does now. Wild fruit is not as sweet as our human grown modern fruit. Over time we have made fruit bigger and bigger and sweeter and sweeter. That's not natural.

Interesting points!

You're on a raw food diet (from your sig)... have you read any of the articles on the website from the top post? Does the advice seem sound?

I've been skimming some of his other articles and it's refreshing to see a level-headed dude tackle diets with the perfect combination of 70+ years of rigorous research and self-experimentation...

But back to fruit... I'm not quite convinced that fruit is on the eat-as-much-as-you-want list just because it's natural. In the end, glucose is glucose, whether it comes from bananas or pop tarts, right? (That's what I've heard... I don't really understand all the metabolic details of digestion).

No, the sugar is sugar view is over simplistic. It's saying fat is fat. Hydrogenated fats are not the same as the natural fats in whole foods like nuts. So white sugar is not equivalent to fruit. Fruit has all the fiber, water, vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins. White sugar is just sugar. You also can't say that white bread is equivalent to whole grains.

I say fruit goes on the eat as much as you want pile, mostly because it has fewer calories per pound than any food other than green vegetables. You would have to eat 20 lbs of watermelon to get 2000 Calories. I don't think you in much danger of eating too much of it.

Also, what is wrong with glucose? Glucose is the best fuel source for your body. There is a reason that when people go into the hospital and can't eat they put them on glucose. It is the only fuel for your brain. All sugar, starches, some protien and fat are turned into sugar for use.

So no, a pop tart is not the same as whole fruit. I think that it would be tough to overeat fruit, and there is so much evidence that they are good for you.

PS- Even the strictest fruitarians eat a lot of non-sweet fruit like tomatoes, peppers, squash, okra, etc. All of these foods are much higher in minerals, protien, and EFA.

Once upon a time, I got so ill eating 20 pcs of tangerines in a single day, that i could barely walk.

I get a little "defensive" sometimes whenever people tell me that I can load myself with as much fruit as i desire because there are really healthy.

Your body isn't used to eating like that so of course you'd get sick. It takes gradualness.

Lol. I said eat as much as you want, not shove 20 tangerines in your face. I would probably get just as sick if I ate a pound of meat. But I don't desire any meat so I don't eat it. I'm just saying it's not unhealthy to eat as much as you want, if you don't want any, or you want just a few, then don't eat 20.

That's like someone taking an "all you can" eat buffet literally.

Hah, this reminded me of one time as a child where I ate a 8kg bag of cherries all by myself, over the course of a couple hours. It was an awful experience to say the least and I had recently watched the movie Witches of Eastwick too so I certainly was mortified when the effects caught up!

I'll definitely stress with Escapee that even good foods/fruits in large amounts is a very bad thing for you...and usually bad for the people close by, too.

Sure, it is still sugar but eating an apple has got to be better for you than eating a mars bar- it still has nutrients and other goods for your body it is not simply straight sugar

Most importantly, the apple has the right types of fiber needed to keep your blood sugar from spiking. When your blood sugar spikes, insulin levels rise and too much insulin over too long a time leads to diabetes and all its nasty complications.
