OK so here's the predicament: I think I broke my arm today while skateboarding... It's my 5th broken arm, but i had "health insurance" for the last four. When I fell I had full mobility in my arm. The issue is in the elbow area and it must have swollen since because i have lost most of that mobility without a LOT of pain. Turns out I can still type with the arm! I probably shouldn't, though. I'm not going to the hospital or the doctor - I plan on treating it myself via a splint or a cast - it can't be that hard. With that said, would anyone (hopefully with some medical or self-treating experience) know of any links to sites where I could figure this out on my own? I imagine all i need to do is immobilize the elbow for x days; I was never given any drugs or anything when I broke them before. One did involve pins, though. |

Yeah I might call around and see who can do what for me. I'll pay, but i want to know how much first. It's moderately painful, and I'd hate to lose perfect use of my arm at 21 years.. I could always just lop it off i guess hospitals can't just turn you away if you can't pay either. I guess I could live with bad credit too |

The local med clinics around here are not really expensive at all. I am sure they would tell you how much an x-ray and a fix up would run. Unless it's a really straightforward break (which I don't know if you can tell from the "outside") I would think you kind of need a pro for this. And I'm really into self care.

The longer you wait to get that set the harder it's going to be to set properly -- the more your arm will swell and the more tissue damage is going to be done. Go get it set. Don't wait until tonight.

Where is your arm broken? If it's a joint, I would try to find a doctor, because joint trouble is not trouble that you want. However, I myself had a greenstick fracture in the middle of my humerus, and all the doctor could really do was give me a sling since a cast would have had to cover half my body to be effective. As long as nothing is misaligned and there's nothing wrong with the joint itself, you can probably get away with just a sling and some aspirin.

Hey guys, I went to the hospital and they put me in a sling after a 5 hour wait. Love the service. They had me come back to wait another 2 hours the next morning for a sling upgrade, and scheduled me so i could come and wait even longer next week. I should have just put it in a sling myself but whatever. A few grand can be made in a week... sucks though. |

Depending on the fracture it may not need to be "set" but you are better safe than sorry in getting it checked out. You don't know if it needs advanced treatment or not until it's xrayed. You risk improper healing, tissue necrosis (death), and lost mobility that you would never regain without corrective surgery. A few thousand well spent.
