How old is your mattress, and what kind of condition is it in?

I have been there too m8 and still are sometimes, but definitely a lot better than it used to be. It is extremely crappy when you are not sleeping (or sleeping very lightly) because you do not feel confident to face the challenges of the day.

There are a couple of things that affect my sleeping ability:

1.) My level of activity. If I had an extremely busy day where I was continually in the moment (not stressed out so to speak) I usually sleep very deeply. This is, however, not 100% within your control.

2.) My diet. This one is huge. I would suggest you to eat only fruits (non-fatty) for a couple of days and see if this affects your sleeping ability. If so, you know you can do a lot by changing your diet. Coffee, even in the morning is a biggy you want to avoid (and this may be difficult because you feel sluggish in the morning and 'need' coffee to get you started).

3.) My emotions. If I am truly relaxed and had a great time I sleep a lot deeper.

The following help me sleep

Reading in bed until I start to nod off

Avoiding chocolate, sugar, caffeine, alcohol etc

Sex always crashes me out afterwards

Avoiding naps during the day

Hmm maybe you have a bad case of insomnia?..or perhaps maybe since you were sleeping bad as a kid, your body has already adopted to this kind of sleeping habits... Whenever you get home, try to sleep early. Constant doing of this, may somehow help your body clock to adjust, and so allows you to sleep already.

Default right up my alley

hello from a fellow insomniac!
the idea posted about a new bed is good, i helped me a bit.
keeping busy all day was a great post, even on a day off, try to stay busy, mentally or physically... sometimes you just need to tire yourself out.
one major one that i didnt see anyone post about is your environment

you have to have an environment that is conducive to sleep, whatever makes you comfortable. quiet. dark. white noise is great, leave a fan on, the humming can help dramatically.

another factor is how you unwind... some people read, some people watch TV, i personally cant do anything that will wake my head up like that, if i read or watch TV i wont unwind and will have a heck of a time sleeping...
sometimes i have to finish with what i'm doin that day and just stop, sit down, and relax...

one thing to remember is that once you lay down, if you cant sleep in 15-20 minutes, its usually good to get up and get a drink of water or just sit up on the edge of the bed, laying there awake can cause you to get agitated or anxious, keeping you up longer
