On a suggestion from my teacher. I recently adopted the practice of having a handful (about 10) of sprouted almonds every morning. It's only been two days but the results have been amazing. I feel like I'm on a natural high throughout the day, and much more alert. Usually every afternoon I feel drowsy, but for the past two days, not even a yawn has developed. Though "sprouted" is a bit misleading, since it takes many days for almonds to sprout. But if you soak almonds in water overnight (~ 10 hours), simply peel the skins the next morning and enjoy them. Make sure to chew them until they become a fine paste. It'll be better for digestion and more of the nutrients can be absorbed by the body. Hope you all can benefit from this 'super food' |

I agree that soaking almonds overnight improves their digestablility. Raw almonds are the best to use; the only ones that will sprout! Almonds are rich in calcium and protein. Almond milk can be made by soaking almonds overnight with some dates in filtered water and then next day blending them together. Try, it's delicious.

Since I have a vitamix, I've never had to soak my almonds before blending them. In fact, as I write this, I'm enjoying a half almod half pecan milk. But upon reading about improved digestibility, I think I'll try it. How long does it take to actually SPROUT them? |

If you live in America, your "raw" almonds are actually pasteurised. If you agree that that's appalling, I recommend protesting in the strongest terms to everyone you can. Hopefully if enough people protest, something will be done. |

^Most of them are, but most major supermarkets like Shoprite (where I usually shop) have organic natural almonds as well. Yeah they're more expensive, but I buy them every week to mix with my salad. I'm interested in trying these sprouted almonds out, maybe have a few with my fruit breakfast each morning.

However you can gain the benefits of it by only soaking them overnight. Quote:
The only thing I've changed is my breakfast routine.. so I attribute it to the almonds :-)

You can buy non pasteurized, raw, organic almonds (wow, that was a mouthful) in the US but they will be from Spain, Italy or elsewhere since this new law took effect last September. You can also find them online. I think Alyssa Cohen may sell them on her site...

Hmm... I think it's not necessary to peel them. I totally love soaked almonds too, but I don't peel them. They taste less bitter peeled, it depends on your taste if that's better or not.

Hello, I am new here. I was searching for the benefits of soaked almonds on the internet and saw this. I have been suffering from severe migraine headaches for many years now, and someone told me to eat 15 soaked almonds along with a banana, ground together, first thing in the morning. Until now I have always started my day with a glass of warm water, followed by( after about half an hour) fresh fruits like oranges, cantaloupes, grapes and then a banana. I am curous to know what is better, almonds first? or Other fruits first? Quote:

Though I think a few almonds a day can definitely be very beneficial; I think I can make a safe bet that in your case the energy gains are much more caused by the 'removal' of bread than the 'addition' of almonds.

Fat first, fruit second: For me this has lead to feeling very tired and falling asleep. Fat and fruit at the same time: For me this has also lead to feeling very tired and falling asleep. Fruit and then fat: This is what is suggested by almost every resource on digestion I have ever read. Based on my experience it has not produced the same comatose like state the other choices have brought on. (also, for optimal energy it is important to limit the amount of fat you take in) It could be possible that it is important to get full on fruit first, that way you don't overeat on fats. What I have read suggests waiting 30-40 minutes to allow fruit to fully digest. Fat takes about 4 hours. I've found that when I overeat on fats I get a biological stone. If I eat nothing but fats I get dopey, happy, and reality feels kinda fuzzy. If I combine this feeling with fruit I get very tired and fall asleep. I suggest trial and error to see the effects of food on you (I've heard different results for different people) Last edited by RRR; 02-15-2009 at 05:46 PM.

I just looked at Nuts Online, DAMN that's expensive. I definitely could not afford to be a raw food purist. You could probably get this stuff cheaper from a local grower, thankfully I live in Sacramento, California - lots of local growers of practically everything nearby. I think I'll do some scouting around. |

It makes sense. I think I will go back to eating fruits first.

And that chemical seems nasty; it messes with your DNA I think. I order from Nuts Online and have seen those unpasturized organic almonds. I didn't order them. I wasn't sure how they can sell then but I guess European supplies makes sense. I bought some sprouted sunflower seeds and the only difference was they seem to have a harder or crisper out covering. (They didn't have any sprouts growung out of them.) But the nutrition is supposed to better from sprouted seeds. I would use organic seeds and I think they would need to be raw to sprout but but I'm no expert. I read somewhere how to make your own almond milk. I forget how long they should soak but I don't know if you use all of the soaking water.
