Default drugs and consciousness

I've read alot about consciousness on this site, and I began to wonder what others think about drugs and consciousness. Some people believe that drugs inhibit you from being fully conscious, while others believe that drugs aid in reaching new forms of consciousness (i.e. tripping on shrooms).
Do you think that drugs are bad for the conscious minded being, or do you think that it helps as a facilitator in achieving new levels of consciousness or whatnot? i would like to read what you all believe. ^^

I did a fair amound of drugs (mainly hallucinogens) between the ages of 16-22 (I'm 29), and I can say that I think they are gread for shifting perspective, breaking down the ego and bringing you face to face with yourself. I don't think they make you more aware in general, but they can bring the minutiae of things into focus. I definitely am grateful for when I chose to do them correctly. I have been into other dimensions, haha, and if not, it was a projected assumption of my drug laden consciousness about what other dimensions are; and that was an experience in itself.

I have been tempted to do them again for comparative purposes, but I am never sure of the origin, so I am skeptical of it.

It's worth trying at least once, imo.

Lucas said pretty much everything I was going to say. If we're talking about hallucinogens, what they do is give you a vastly different mental perspective. This can be very valuable if you approach the experience consciously. Of course, this perspective shift is temporary, so you have to apply what you learn to the rest of your life, otherwise there is no lasting value.

In every discussion about drugs it should be noted that there are many different types of drugs and they all do different things and entail different health risks. Never do a drug without researching it first. Erowid has loads of objective information about drugs.

The previous two posts said most of what I would have said. Just keep in mind that not all drugs are the same and that the only smart drug user is the well informed drug user.
