Default How many hours per day do you sleep?

I am surprised we do not have this poll here yet. I just recently moved from 7.5-10 hours of sleep to 6 hours of sleep and am very glad I did.

It was pretty easy once I accepted the 90 minute sleep cycles and stopped trying to get up when I was in deep REM sleep which has never worked... I can now get so much more done during the day and feel more energized.

i get about six
im 15 year old sophomore and i just think sleep wastes time.
i try to get as least as i can
iv done 6 for the last 4 days and im staring to get a bit tried so im thinking about napping in the evening
i love to say up late (usually im doing homework which inst fun because i procrastinate) but ecept for that im either chatting, playing games, scripting, or at some of my many forums.

Im trying to cut down on sleep but 6 is a liiiitle to less for me right now
6.5 hours will probably be perfect but my goal is to get about 6 or 5.5 everyday.
the idea of sleep is just boring. so much wasted time, but people call me crazy =p

As described in the polyphasic sleep logs thread, I'm currently on Day 11 of a biphasic sleep 30-day trial. Right now it's 6 hours total per night (2am to 5am and then 9am to 12am), but eventually I'd love to get my sleep cycles to shorten so I only need 4 or 5 hours.

Heh, tropicality, you forgot to put a 2-hour option for Uberman polyphasic sleepers .

I try to get three but it goes over that on weekends and I get a couple minutes of sleep in school during certain times.

I averaged probably five minutes of sleep per class when I was in high school, distributed across about thirty ten-second segments... I hadn't realized it at the time, but I think I was pioneering a new brand of polyphasic sleep .

Did it work?

Well, sleeping five minutes per forty-five minute class means I was for practical purposes only there for forty minutes of the class...what a benefit! Imagine if I had slept ten minutes per class!

(I also got four hours of poor monophasic sleep every night plus a half-hour nap every time I tried to do a reading from A Tale of Two Cities.)

Please tell us more about this 90 minute sleep cycle of which you speak. I haven't heard of this before, but I sure have trouble getting up at 5 am because I'm always in the middle of a great dream . . .

I try to get 10 hours. Sleeping is great, being awake is great, too. Balance between the both seems to be the key to my singing. My body refuses to sing properly with too little sleep.

Hmm I guess what I mean to say was "deep NREM sleep", meaning you are in deep sleep and it is harder to be woken up, if your alarm goes off you will probably just fall back asleep if you don't get out of bed right away. The cycles are different for everyone, but once you are aware of what they are, you can recognize them and adjust your sleep schedule accordingly.

Do a google search on "rem sleep" and you'll find more information, this link contains a chart to explain it more visually: Getting the Sleep You Need: Sleep Stages, Sleep Tips and Aids

But to be honest I am no expert on the subject.

Ideally, I'd like to get 9 or 10 hours every day. I view sleep as incredibly valuable to good health. I don't like to see it as a waste of time...I'd rather just be more efficient with my waking hours and still get plenty of good sleep.

However, right now I'm in a bad cycle of getting only 4 or 5 hours of sleep per night on weekdays and making up for it on the weekends. I go to work at my job everyday and come home to work on my business....hopefully I can break this cycle when I build up my business enough to quit my day job.

Glen Rhodes includes an explanation of the 90-minute sleep cycle in his article on biphasic sleep (but it's just as applicable to normal monophasic sleep).

More specifically, I wonder how many our reported sleep hours are working for us?

I posted 6, because I usually sleep around 6 hours a night, but I'm perpetually exhausted. I know that I personally need more sleep considering my diet and lifestyle.

7.5 a night at the moment, I do the whole 90-minute sleep cycle thing too.

The theory behind it is that humans sleep in cycles of an hour and a half, moving from light sleep, down into deep sleep, then back up into REM sleep where we're at the best point to wake up (REM or just after in light sleep before going back down). That's why 8 hours doesn't really work very well - odds are most people are back down into semi-deep or even totally deep sleep by then.

Everyone sleeps at a slightly different rate, though - I find mine are a little less than 90 minutes, because I can get by on about 7 hours and twenty, but with 7 hours and forty I wake up groggy. So there's experimentation there too.

Another tip for waking up without grogginess is to wake up to light instead of an alarm - sleep with your curtains open. Doesn't work too well in the British winter, though :P

I'll sleep between 6 and 7 hours. Less is deadly for me.
