Default bags under eyes

For the last 5 years or so i've noticed bags under my eyes and they don't go away,no matter how long i'm awake. When i first wake up,my eyes are puffy all over but my lids return to normal within a few hours but under my eyes stays puffy. I am only 35,and i've never seen eye bags in anyone my age. You can kinda see it in pictures but when i look in the mirror it is really obvious. What causes this and can you get rid of it?

It can often be caused by high levels of stress, for example you often see it in people who have high pressure jobs - business executives, football managers, air traffic controllers. It is heightened if you have sleeping problems - well stress can lead to sleeping problems, which can lead to further stress too, and so on..

If you think this may be the case perhaps you should take a look at the activities in your life, are you in control or constantly rushing from one thing to the next? Try and make some time for yourself just to relax, or taking up a relaxing past time like yoga, meditation, or tai chi could be beneficial for you - if not something as simple as putting your feet up and reading a book might do.

lol that's funny,i'm actually sitting back reading a book right now! I do meditation occasionally, and work out a lot. But i still feel rushed in my daily life to get everything done i want to get done. I didnt realize stress could cause that. I also heard it was water retention or bad circulation, but i drink water all day long and i move around enough,so i thought maybe there were other causes i didnt know about. Guess i'll try to relax a little more!

Don't worry, Rockchick26.

I'm 24 and look like 32

I agree with Real Subliminal. Things like stress, nicotine, too much partying and so on can cause those "signs of age". Drinking water is doubtless very good for everything.

But, you know, I care a lot for my body, but I still got those sacks and tired eyes. So I tried things like sun studio, special creams and so on. They can help when using the right dose.

I agree, drinking water is good.

I read somewhere that when you are dehydrated, your body start to store water in weird places (like under your eye), this could be the cause of your bags.

Anyway I'm sure drinking water will help somewhat because I used to have bags under my eye too but now it isn't so noticeable.

How much do you sleep?

This may sound weird but it might also be because you sleep too much. I read in a book called "counting sheep" or something like that. It said that there used to be a theory that Rapid Eye Movement is to stir your eye fluid so it doesn't dry out/build up or something like that. So it might be because you have a build up of eye fluid.

I'm young (16), and I have these. Good, consistent, sufficient sleep doesn't help much. I drink enough water (my urine is almost clear almost all the time).

All i drink is water! I drink it throughout the day at work, and i drink it with every meal. I would find it hard to beleive i am not getting enough water.

That's interesting! Well,i always aim for 8 hours, sometimes i get more, and sometimes i get less but i'm always IN BED at least 8 hours. People tell me i'm wierd for needing 8 hours though,my dad says he sleeps about 3 hours a night and he's fine. But i am still a firm believer in my 8 hours so thats what i always try to get and i do about 90% of the time.

I've read that if you wake up with puffy eyes, it might be from allergies. Try changing out your pillow/using an anti-allergy one, checking your laundry detergent, etc.

Another piece of advice I read was to try sleeping with the head of your bed elevated a few inches to 'drain' fluids from your face.

For me I've had the best results when I cut out refined carbohydrates-- have you ever tried the Dr. Perricone 3-day diet? (I think they call it the 3 day nutritional facelift, sounds gimmicky, I know). But when I did that, all puffiness was gone. And of course, watch your salt intake.

Do you spend alot of time in front of screens? I 100% blame the influence of computer games for my bags. I'm now 18 and they haven't gone away. Luckily my face looks sharper in general now I've matured physically and it's not as noticeable. I've kind of grown out of caring - people meet me with bags, they're used to them on me!

I concentrate intensely on something I enjoy, so when playing a fun computer game I would lean in and stare and really concentrate. I think that was the problem.

I've noticed that after quitting computer games the bags have also reduced in size. Unfortunately, I spend alot of time at my laptop still, such is the lifestyle of a student. But now I minimize it to essential activities; including personal growth!

Does anybody have any other information about screens and bags under the eyes? There is definately a correlation, but I imagine exposure at different points in the day is influential, for example.

I did a google search on "bags under eye"

It said that there wasn't a scientifically proven way to get rid of bags.

However, putting ice cubes, potatoes slices or tea bags on your eye helps

I've never had allergies before, and i've probably had 3 different pillows in the last few years,as well as different laundry detergents. I haven't noticed a difference no matter what changes i make.

I heard that too...i bought one of those cushion pad things (forget the technical term) that has more padding at the top so your head is up higher. I also tried one of those wedges, where your head is up A LOT higher. Neither have made a difference.

I've never heard of this diet! Is there information online about it? I'll try it! Oh and as for salt,i dont even OWN any salt. I also try to avoid processed foods as much as i can. Most of what i eat is whole wheat bread, fruit, whole grain pasta and organic sauce, yogurt, oatmeal, that kinda stuff.

I do spend a lot of time in front of my tv,and for 3 years i literally sat 2 feet from my tv because my room was small and i had to sit on my bed which was right next to my tv. Now i live somewhere else so my tv is farther away, but the bags are still there. Also, somebody mentioned holding something cool up to the eyes to get rid of the puffiness, that has never worked for me either,i have a few of those eye masks, they've never worked either.

Hm, maybe some people just have a kind of natural tendency of getting bags while other's don't.

When you get tired of tricks which haven't worked for you, I see three options:
  1. accept the bags: You got a natural tendency and there's no easy trick to get rid of them.
  2. hide the bags: You got them, alright. Now you could use creams, powders and other girls' things to hide them. Ask a cosmetician.
  3. kill the bags: You got them, you hate them. Search for more "invading" methods, like operations or injections. Ask a dermatologist.

i have dark shadows under my eyes and always have. i spent the past week in front of the computer too long and didn't get near the amount of sleep that i'm used to. they got twice as bad.last night, i got over 8 hours and the dark circles decreased a lot.

my natural tendency to have dark circles still really annoys me since i hate to wear makeup. i think its a lack of fatty tissue underneath the eye and the thin skin makes veins and such easy to see. yuck, i'm starting to contemplate what kind of "invasive" methods will kill my bags. gross.

meh, i don't really care too much yet. i'll check again when i'm 35.
