Default Favourite caffeine-free tea?

A few months ago I managed to greatly reduce my coffee intake (from 8-10 cups daily to 2-3 cups per week) by switching to green tea. Unfortunately, this is also quite high in caffeine (at least the varieties I prefer), and upsets sleep when I have too much.

Has anyone found any reasonable caffeine-free teas? By reasonable I mean tasty and lacking all things artificial.

Unfortunately, Celestial Seasonings doesn't yet ship overseas, but here's the contact info for their Australian distributor, who would be happy to tell you where to find some in your area (assuming you live in that Sydney):

Australia
United Foods Pty. Ltd.
Unit 1
39-41 Allingham St.
Condell Park
New South Wales 2200
61 2 9790 0866
61 2 9793 8046 (fax)
(I trust that makes sense to you. Sure doesn't to me. )

They're Boulder-based, so they have a wide range of non-caffeine beverages without strange additives.

Celestial Seasonings is great.

I also like Yogi Organic Green Tea Kombucha Decaf. It has a very subtle flavor, and is perfect with a small dash of honey.

Yep, I'm in that Sydney. And the info makes perfect sense - cheers.

Cassie, that's the second time today someone's mentioned adding honey to green tea. Will give it a go (as a matter of fact, the kettle's just boiled).

Why dont you just make your own? Go to your local health food store and pick up some dried herbs and a brewing pot. I suggest 1 part Chamomile to 2 parts Peppermint.

What about Rooibos? It's a good non-addictive substitution to caffeine drinks!

I second the vote for home-brewed blends. That way you know how fresh the herbs are. My favorite is chamomile and lemon balm (the one thing in my garden the deer haven't croped to the ground).

I've completely replaced coffee with peppermint herbal tea -- love it!!
And the great thing is, all my favorite cafes serve it! You can meet a friend for coffee, and not have to have coffee! Brilliant

So far I'm leaning towards this option - the challenge now is to find a good health food store.

I'm also intrigued by Rooibos. I've never seen it before, which gives it a couple of bonus points

Rooibos is fantastic as there are so many varieties. You can even get green rooibos. I often just get a packet of loose leaf rooibos tea and add extras myself. Good things to add are ground cardamon, lemon grass, verbena, cinamon, dried apple, red peppercorns .... whatever you fancy.

Default Green tea extract

Body Ecology Diet, also www.mercola.com sell a green tea extract that has all the polyphenols, but no caffiene, flouride, or aluminum. You actually make a cup of tea from the extract. It isn't just a "green tea supplement." It costs about twenty dollars for 60 servings.

Well, any store that sells dried herbs will work, you may be able to find them at more upscale groceries too.

Celestial Seasonings Honey Vanilla Chamomile is one of the best teas around, not to mention their fruit zingers. They even have a Sleepytime tea.

I actually prefer Bigelow to Celestial Seasonings. They have a great variety of teas. I have yet to find one I don't like with the sole exception of Green Tea with Mango (blech). Anything with any type of mint or chamomile is my favorite, but the fruit flavored teas work well, too, especially apple-cinnamon or blueberry. The key for me is variety. As we speak, I have three varieties of green tea (chamomile, mint and lemon) for the morning and 16 varieties of herbal teas for the afternoon sitting at my desk. I still drink coffee, but not nearly as much and I've pretty much licked my sleeping problems by limiting myself to only two cups of caffeinated tea drunk before noon. After lunch I switch to the herbal blends.

I finally got around to getting some Rooibos today and, well, it's an acquired taste. I may try another brand or two, but the variety I have here leans more toward black tea than green tea. Not for me I'm afraid.

I hate to be pedantic, but it's not tea if it isn't tea. Rooibos and other herbal blends are called infusions. Tea specifically refers to the stuff made from Camillia Sinensis, which can prepared from the fresh leaves in a number of different ways resulting in white, black, green, oolong, pu-erh, lapsang souchang and probably a few others I'm not thinking of. Except red (usually). While, in China, the Chinese refer to what we call black tea as red tea, when we see red tea it usually means rooibos.

Now that we have the naming issue out of the way (and no, I don't really care if you call infusions tea, but to a tea person it can be confusing.), I have some suggestions for finding a good infusion you like. Make one. Also, don't (for the love of god!!!) ever drink decaf; it usually is processed in such a way as to leave behind cancer causing chemicals (same with coffee). There are plenty of better things out there.

Try out a couple of infusions of different dried herbs that sound tasty. I like mint (which is really good, and comes in many different varieties), camomile (sp?), lavender (the best) and ginger root (use fresh), to name a few. For most herbs, prepare the infusion as you would loose black tea (Use approx 1 teaspoon (5 mL) herbs per 6 oz (like 200 mL or so) cup. Pour boiling water over the herbs in a warmed vessel. Let steep five minutes. Strain and serve.). For rooty things like ginger, you may like a longer steep time or perhaps even boil it directly for a while.

After you have a good idea what a number of herbs taste like (and don't be afraid to try crazy things, like rosemary or peppercorns or pine needles (Warning: evergreens other than pine can be poisonous including firs which look a lot like pine to most people)), put a few together that sound like they'd do well. Also, some (like peppercorns) are good as an addition to some blends but not at all good by themselves. Two parts lavender to one part mint is very good. You can also add certain dried fruits like dried chopped berries and also fresh lemon peel (sparingly).

Other good things to try are licorice root, cinnamon, (stay away from nutmeg), kola nut, lapacho, and yerba mate. Lapacho is a bark from South America that has healing powers (particularly, it works well to restore fungal balance as in jock itch, athlete's foot and yeast infections), and it also tastes good (a lot like rooibos). It needs to be boiled for quite a while, and it's ratio is a bit different than for most other infusions.

Yerba mate is a traditional South American infusion that does contain caffeine. It's caffeine content is fairly low compared to most teas and coffees, but still apparent to drinkers. It's really, really tasty though, and it comes in two varieties. The green variety is light and earthy. The roasted variety is spicy, almost like an already put together chai without the milk.

If you would like to stay in the tea world, at least occasionally, you should give white tea a try. It generally has a lower amount of caffeine than green or black (black generally has the highest but this isn't always true), and is very delicate in flavor. It also has the highest amount of anti-oxidants of any tea. It's basically a green tea that is only made from the tips (the youngest and most prized type of leaf) and is steamed directly in the field (green tea is usually steamed at a steam house after harvest, which means it a had maybe an hour to wilt before steaming, whereas white is steamed immediately; sometimes green tea is pan-fried instead of steamed (and no, I'm not joking and they don't use oil).). White tea is also usually much more expensive but it generally worth it.

Another actual tea to try is pu-erh. It is black tea that was kept a bit moster than usual, pressed into forms, and aged underground in casks for a time (1-2 years, though sometimes as long as 40) before being sold. It has a strong earthy flavor that will seriously remind you of horses but is somewhat lower in caffeine than regular black tea. In China, it is considered a medicinal tea used to stop colds and whatnot. I think it's quite delicious when taken with milk.

I'm drinking gunpowder green tea right now. It does get a bit strong if you let it steep too long. I usually set the timer for five minutes, and make sure to remove the ball when the timer goes off. I'm going to see if I can find some loose white tea locally, just so I can encourage local stores to keep carying it.

I recently cut 2/3 of my coffee habit, so now I drink tea all day just to have a hot beverage around. Mostly chamomile and peppermint from Celestial Seasonings, chamomile for when I want to slow down and peppermint when I need a boost.

ChefSalad: after reading your post I suddenly have an urge to get serious about tea (extended pinky finger and all)

Yogi tea Ginkgo IQ tea. Great flavor and a subtle "lift". But I still like myself my daily Indian chai (black tea) made with freshly ground spices the traditional way

Sounds like an interesting combination. Have you actually seen it in a shop somewhere, or do you just get it online?

Hi mate

Yep - T2 have got a store in Newtown (King St) and one in Chatswood Chase. They are quality - I could literally spend ages in there!

And come to think of it, I am sure there is one at Bondi Junction too now.

Hopefully youre not too far from one of those!

Have a great day

Cool. I used to live near King St, but haven't been out that way for a while. This sounds like a perfect excuse to check it out again
