I have been losing my hair steadily for the last few years. I have researched possible prevention/reversal methods for a long time, but have not been successful in halting the fallout. My plan is to try to eat as healthy as possible (veganism, raw foods, vitamins, etc.) while trying out supplements and other products that claim to help prevent hair loss (not including synthetics at this point). Does anyone have any further advice on the topic?

Nutritionally, avoid Soy in all it's forms(and trust me, It's EVERYWHERE)like the plague. Polysorbate 80 is inexpensive. add that to your gentle shampoo(find a brand that has no Sodium laurel sulfate) for a topical treatment. Maca has shown good results as Testosterone booster. But it in bulk powder, not capsules Zinc Citrate. Vitamin C(lots of it) in both water(ascorbic acid) and Fat(Ascorbyl Palmitate) soluble forms SDtart a weight training program. Anaerobic "sprinting" stop/start type sports/activities. Avoid simple refined foods of ANY KIND. Sorry, that includes bread. Basically, a Paleo diet.BTW, Paleo is Mostly fresh veggies, greens. fruits, nuts. Range free eggs and meats+ wild fish comprises only about 30% of optimal paleo diet What is going on here of course, is we're trying to maximize T levels and minimize estrogen. Think of a time in a mans life when he has a full head of hair; it also happens to be when he has has highest levels of testosterone coursing though his veins---age 15 -20! I can't recall to many bald guys in that age group. Check out Dr Wongs articles. The Real Reason Men Lose Their Hair by Dr. William Wong, ND, PhD You don't have to shop for supplements where he suggests; You can find much cheaper sources elsewhere. all this combined should at the very least halt the hair loss and with time perhaps mildly reverse it. this has been my experience. Excellent Lodestar: I've done a bit of reading on regulating testosterone levels. After reading the article you linked by Dr. Wong, I decided to do more searching on the subject. The two science journal articles I read concerning maca powder found that eating maca powder increased sex drive in men after about 8 weeks of use, but testosterone levels were unaffected. There seems to be some debate over whether maca powder actually does anything to testosterone levels. I also read up on soy. Again, I turned to publications from science journals. In one study, they compared two strength training groups -- one group ate meat, while the other ate tofu. The two diets were kept as similar as possible in terms of protein amount, carb %, etc. After several weeks, there was no significant difference in strength results and testosterone levels between the two groups. I'm not claiming that this Dr. Wong is a quack (though I'm naturally suspicious of doctors who seem to be as interested as selling a product as they are in presenting unbiased information), but I don't think his claims about soy and maca are as clear-cut as he makes them out to be. |

Mineral imbalance or Copper deficiency can cause hair loss or white hair. Too much of vitamin C, Zinc, Iron ( mostly from supplements ) for long term can induce copper deficiency. Copper deficiency hair loss - Google Search mineral deficiency hair loss - Google Search When the expert said a well balanced diet ( that covers all essential nutrients ) for the promotion of good health ( + good hair ), they really meant it . Hi littledevil1908, I refer to a book (or rather encyclopedia) on illnesses and disease frequently to determine the source of my problems/challenges. Anytime I have a headache, it's related to, "Negative I AM's". In other words I'm saying something negative about myself in the form of a statement. Once I get present to this, the headache usually clears within about an hour. The book is called, 'Your Body's Telling You: Love Yourself', written by Lise Bourbeau. Lise has complied over 20 years of research in this book to explain mental and emotional blocks and how they manifest in the body. I've got a preview of the book on my Favorite Books link under SELF-AWARENESS. Stephen Martile — Personal Development Made Simple |

Dude, if you want to stop losing hair you better start eating meat/eggs/get a lot of protein from other sources. I have to go, but when i get back I will try to find some of the research I read that shows vegans are prime for hairloss. For now, check out the HairLossHelp.com forums and ask them over there. Hair Loss Help Forums They are good over there, lots of good topics. |

I don't have this problem yet, but it runs in my family so I'm afraid I'll have to deal with it sooner or later. I just hope a lot more research is done over the next 10 years. I want there to be a safe miracle solution by then -- I like my hair too much to let it dissapear. Last edited by Marco Polo; 02-20-2008 at 08:59 AM. |

I don't know about the diet side, but getting enough vitamins and minerals is prob important - perhaps a supplement? My hair started falling out due to anorexia about a year ago (so gaining weight played a part too in it growing back but), I went to the hairdressers to have my hair cut and I didn't mention the cause of the hair loss but they gave me lots of advice ... 1. Massage your scalp (press your fingers in quite hard) for about 5 minutes a day, or more. Actually do it whenever you get the chance. 2. Use conditioner on your hair and massage it in for 5 minutes. You can also leave it on for half an hour (wrap it in a towel) then wash it off. Or you can do it with olive oil which is great for your hair. ... I think the idea with conditioner is a dry scalp isn't good for hair growth. 2. Organic shampoo!! My hairdresser told me lots of women (and men) are now going bald because of the chemicals in shampoo and the drying effects and such. They told me that a lot of shampoos contain silicone (which makes your hair appear shiny), so what it does is it coats your scalp and hair in silicone, and the moisture can't get through it. Underneath the shiny, healthy looking hair is dry damaged hair and a dry scalp. Which is bad for hair growth. So she told me to try organic shampoo as it lets moisture into your hair and hair. Or find a shampoo without silicone in (you will have to look it up online, they use a different name than silicone on the ingredients) .. herbal essences is one I think (not the conditioner though). With those 3 things combined my hair started growing back nearly immediately. I did also start eating not too long after so that plays a part of course, but I think the massaging in particular was good for my hair, in the bits I massaged the most (the front) my hair started growing right away (it's about 3 inches long now). |

Why not accept the fact that hair loss is a natural thing? Get a buzz cut and accept it. It's a lot easier to take care of too. My hair kept creeping backwards for some time, or as other people put it, I was getting a high forehead. Now I buzz my hair with number 2 clippers and am loving it. I tried #1 clippers also, but my wife didn't quite like it that short. But I like the shorter hair now and except for a little sunburn now and again, then there is not any issue I have on the shorter hair. But if like my brother, you are harboring on the long biker hair thing, then take some of the steps to keep what you have. But for me, I just accept the enevitable and learn to like the less amount of hair. |

My hair has ONLY fallen out after I've been through a very stressful event. Last year was very difficult for me, and I ended up losing nearly half of my hair! Now, my hair is long (down to my waist) and it was quite noticeable.. So after research, I began taking a great multi-vitamin everyday, BIOTIN supplement, as well as learning to relax and let go into life more. This has all been extremely helpful to me and my hair has grown back wonderfully now! Is it possible that you're dealing with a lot of stress? Life can completely overwhelm us at times, I know, but it can quickly become more fluid if we consciously allow it to be! Remember to also focus on GROWTH, not loss.. the more you think loss, the more you may lose. |
