Question Is it easier for depressed people to sleep polyphasically?

It is a confirmed fact that people diagnosed with depression enter REM sleep dramatically quick- researchers have mentioned it is as if they are in a hurry to hit REM as soon as they fall asleep. Now, being a manic-depressive, I am my own (incidental) guinea pig, and can confirm this beyond the shadow of a doubt. During my bouts of depression, i begin to dream intensely, vividly almost as soon as i close my eyes, sometimes even before I have started really sleeping - as mentioned by Steve once in his polyphasic logs. And I dream a hell lot more than during my bouts of normalcy and can even remember most of my vivid dreams. Once I even survived a depressive bout by rigorously maintaining a dream blog that was literally overflowing with entries.

Now, I am NOT A polyphasic sleeper and if the rule of 90-minutes-to-hit-REM is true, how come I am able to hit REM so quickly in monophasic life? Does that mean When I am depressed I need a lot less sleep than normal?

Any information/sharing of individual experience will be most welcome as I am thinking of going polyphasic - since it seems incredibly easy to me. I know I can hit REM real fast even without any adaptation....now I really am eager to find any advantages of being chased by the Black Dog almost all my life. Help!
