It varies from person to person; some need 9 hours a night while others need only 4 hours.

Steve's last article deals with this issue:

There was a cancer study which 1.000.000+ participants that found that people who sleep six hours had the lowest risk of dying in during the period the observed.

There is some reasoning that lets a few people on the net assume that you can get lower than that if you take naps.

I used to *need* 9.

Now I sleep on average 6 - 7.25 hours a day and feel great!

Yes, but it may have nothing to do with the sleep itself. It may have been that those who slept only 6 hrs sleep did so because they were very lively people who worked hard and kept themselves fit. The 6 hours sleep could be a red herring. I know loads of slobs who work in my industry who drink way too much, eat cr@p and fall asleep on the couch around 2 am and are still in work next day at the given hour.

I could bet my house that they WILL develop cancer at a higher rate then the average, evn though they average 6 hours sleep.
