Default I "chug down" everything I drink

I just realized this today. I can't recall the last time I ever just casually sipped on anything (other than hot coffee or tea), if I have a glass of water or juice or a protein shake in front of me, no matter the size (I'm talking up to 32oz or so here), I just chug it all down almost at once. I also have "spontaneous urination" attacks (not completely out of nowhere or uncontrollable/unable to be held in though ), usually occuring with the pressure power of a firehose, and I think this is probably why (don't ask why I haven't put this together before).

This is probably a silly question, but are there any drawbacks to drinking water in this fasion (I drink a lot of water every day)? Less absorbtion or flushing out vitamins/minerals before they can be absorbed or anything like that?

Well, eating many meals per day is better than eating a few for most factors...
If you drink all of your water at once then it would probably have an effect.

Also, if the water you drink isn't absorbed, it'll come out of your ass. So, it's getting absorbed unless you have diarrhea...

Anything in your urine was absorbed and stayed in the bloodstream until it wasn't needed and the kidneys filtered it out. Anything in your feces is stuff that wasn't digested.

The kidneys need sodium to filter out excess water; the sodium's filtered out along with the water. (maybe postassium too) I'm pretty sure they also expel water when there's an excess of sodium. So, if you drink a bunch of water all at once and later eat most of your sodium, you'd have a lack of sodium at one point and then dehydration at another.

I'm not sure how it'd affect digestion of food.

You can die from an extreme excess of water. That takes an awful lot, though. Too much water will flush out essential nutrients and cause things like sodium imbalances, which leads to the nervous system malfunctioning because sodium is essential to the transmission of nerve signals. Like I said, though, that takes an awful lot.

I'd suggest a little psychology: serve yourself water in smaller portions. Use an 8 oz. glass instead of a 32 oz one. One serving of water will last proportionally longer that way and you won't tend to gorge on it as much.

I think mike adam said somewhere, that even water in excess is poison.

I am exactly the same, I just had 3 pints of water before lunch, then during lunch I had two half-pints of green tea and a pint of water, and after I type this, I am probably off for another pint.

I also have the same bladder problem. I went to my doctor about it and he thinks I have an overactive bladder problem. It could be the case, but my bladder never acts up when I don't slam down so much liquid.

I will tell you this though, my bladder does tend to act up more after a temperature change, coming in from the cold, etc... also after drinking tea or wine, though you probably knew that...just FYI. I don't have anything to tell you about health except that I think a lot of water is good for you, my doctor didn't tell me to back off on all the drinking at all. I have heard that healthy urine should run clear, and it has been years since I could claim to have had unhealthy urine.

Thanks for the respsonses! I know about "water poisoning" but am not worried about that, I drink a whole lot per day but never an enormous amount all at once, which IIRC is how that can occur (chugging down a single 32oz glass shouldn't cause any problems). In order to OD on water, you'd almost have to be trying, or doing something such as long distance running and intaking too much water without enough sodium to balance what you lose while sweating, etc.

LOL here try this one CALM DOWN and drink your water slowly. Its not like you are in a metal room with a glass in front of you and a 20 second timer before a guy comes in and takes it away from you and dont give you another one for 3 days LOL

I almost always drink/chug water a half-liter at a time, and I've never had any trouble with it. In a normal day, I drink about a gallon (~4 liters).
