One more reason to grow your own or buy locally.

Why is it that these farms can't keep poop off of our produce? You'd think that wouldn't be a problem. I can totally understand how meat would get contaminated with e-coli, but not produce.

This is getting old. There was just a spinach recall not long ago, and another spinach recall before that.

I feel like I read somewhere that it's the bagged stuff that's dangerous. That regular heads of lettuce, etc. is safe. Guess I am getting a salad spinner and just going that route.

Agreed with WO. I'll just buy what's at the farmers' market from the people I know and trust.

Sometimes it pays to be snooty. I'd rather be snooty than have E. coli....ewww.

That's crazy. I am glad he made it!

Oh, and I don't really think that's snooty either. Buying locally grown stuff is better in so many ways.

It's funny I kinda get worried when I order a side salad at a restraunt or buy stuff to make a salad. I worry about that more than if my meats are cooked all the way.

Part of the problem is uncontroled agricultural runoff from neighboring farms. Another part of the problem is that the environment inside the 'bag' is an ideal medium for the growth of bacteria. Since salad greens are usually eaten raw, that makes e-coli contamination more of a risk than in meat, because e-coli is destoryed by high temperature cooking.

That makes sense, WanderingOak. Sounds like we need some serious controls in place, though. A bacteria associated with animal waste should never contaminate a plant product.
