Default Server upgrade complete

The server upgrade was completed this morning and only required a few minutes of downtime. This upgrade should help the forums remain fast and responsive as the audience grows... at least until the next upgrade is needed.

The new setup includes 1.5TB of monthly bandwidth (that's terabytes, or trillions of bytes). Currently we're using a third of that, so there's plenty of room to grow.

I just have to say that I'm drooling over 1.5TB... I wish I had that much bandwidth, not to mention the need for it.

And it's good to know that we're ready for plenty of expansion.

3TB only costs $5/month with most good hosting services.

Well, obviously I haven't looked at commercial hosting packages for a few years...

If I can use the idle bandwidth that I would otherwise be paying for, from my personal use, to host a site, then it's still cheaper than even $5/month, right?

Of course, once I get enough visitors to warrent an upgrade, three TB sounds pretty nice.

Anyways, back to praising Steve for his great job on setting up the forums.

3TB on a shared hosting account would be great if I was only serving up file downloads. The intensive CPU load and database access required by the forums' dynamic pages requires more than a shared hosting account can provide, unless I just want to serve up 3TB worth of "server busy" pages.

Unfortunately, I know. You probably need a heavy-duty dedicated server.

Steve uses ServInt. He has the Solo Plus VPS package (I presume). That's $219/monthly.

Actually, I have theoretically infinite bandwidth, but sometimes I feel like my site's served over a 56kb modem. Given that I'm only trying to run a personal blog, so that's ok.

I'm curious to see the BW and CPU used after this month is up.
