Default looking for guidance

hey,

i'm not a forum person really, i just was googling "quit master's" and came upon a post in this web site ... and i'M in a phase right now where i've really been bitching about my life to anyone who will listen .... so i thought what better place than an online forum.

i guess you could say i am a smart person, i got very good grades in my bachelor's, and I stumbled into a master's program in biochem/plant physiology. I've also been depressed on and off the past few years, but it didn't prevent me from finishing my bachelor's; but now I really can't function doing my research and lab work. I have no focus, and I am not enjoying life at all. I started seeing a psych in january, I've gone twice so far. Things are really reaching the breaking point for me, which is why i'm considering letting go of my studies. I also have no love life, a weak social life, and I'm a very indecisive and overly-thoughtful person.

so I guess you could say some personal development is in order .....

I guess the quandary is that I know I could handle this master's, but there is just too much s*** in my personal life going on right now for me to even think lucidly.

any input would be kindly appreciated

You've come to the right place.

Depression sucks, seriously. I know this firsthand. It will sap you of all your energy and disable you from doing so many things. So the first thing I would ask is, why are you depressed? Did something happen? Is there some aspect of your life that you don't like right now, such as your social life?

You mentioned that there is a lot of s*** going on in your personal life right now. Care to elaborate? Do you think this could be what's causing your depression?

Ultimately, it is up to you to achieve what you want. The people here can provide guidance and direction, but you are the only one who can walk through the door, so to speak.

i don't think anything in particular happened, it's been a couple years, i haven't been satisfied with my social life, love life, but fundamentally I think it might just be my doubting, questioning, over-thinking personality. right now i'm pretty miserable because I'm trying to do a master's degree and it's turning out to be really difficult to focus.

Don't tell me that. I still have to get my master's degree.

Anyway, perhaps you should just change your personality to one that isn't doubting, questioning, and over thinking things?

But of course, I also doubt, question, and over think things. But this doesn't bother me at all.

You mentioned your love life. This is an area that effects a lot of people in a bad way, so I would encourage you to explore that area. Or at least to say something like, "Right now, I need to get my Master's. After I get my Master's, then I'll worry about my love life", or something along those lines.

If you need more specific advice, there's a forum here for social and relationships. They should be able to assist further. This isn't really my strong point, as all of my relationships just kind of happened by accident.
