We're having Tofurkey, which is a vegan version of a turkey that comes with stuffing, dumplings, and vegan gravy. Five years ago it tasted like cardboard, and I swore I'd never have it again. But a couple years ago we had it at a vegan friends' house, and the recipe was improved dramatically to the point where it's delicious. We also have sweet potatoes, green beans, apple and pumpkin pies, and a few other items. We have dozens of vegan cookbooks, so there's lots to pick and choose from. It's much easier to be vegan today than it was five years ago. |

Steve forgot to mention the salad and the cheese potato casserole (potatoes, melty vegan cheddar cheese, sour cream, chives, and sometimes vegan bacon bits). I have a great vegan pumpkin pie recipe and when I used to bring this to my extended family's thanksgiving even the omnivores dove right into it. I don't think they would have if I told them it had tofu in it, so I didn't tell them. They just loved it. |

Hi Erin, I'm going to make the Tofurkey next weekend when my kids celebrate with me... are there any special "kid tips" in making this, to get the best success? Sometimes you only get one chance to make a good impression, especially when it's called tofurkey...I want to do it right blessings to you and yours...and all today, Pam |

I actually burned the tofurkey last year because I didn't know it needed to be thawed 24 hours prior. So I'll let you know how it goes this year. I think I've got it down now. It's in the oven cooking right now. It's all about the gravy. The tofurkey is pretty good, but the gravy is awesome. |

The tofurkey came out great this time! No sticking or burning. The taste reminds me of the old Turkey TV dinners from Swanson or Hungry Man. Weird flashback. The gravy is awesome. Rest of the dinner was good too.

Our tofurkey did not have gravey or anything. It did have a stuffing want to be in the middle, but that was pretty bad too. I would love to find a good Tofurkey. For dinner we had, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, cranberries, salad, popovers, and pupmkin pie for dessert. Thank goodness for earth balance vegan butter without which half the food could not be made Unfortunately, we also had a turkey, because we had meat eaters with us this year visiting, and they point blank told us if we did not make one, they would go out and buy one. At least we were able to get a range free – less cruel turkey. Then we bought disposable cooking ware as well. I did not want to give on this point, but I was a guest as well, and it was the host's decision. Adrienne | |

The friend who made it is out of town, but I'll try to remember to ask her next week. She made a full veggie dinner for about 30 people, and it was /stunning/. The Tofurkeys looked like little mountains, and before I knew what they were, I frankly wasn't enthused about them. But then--then! |

These were the pre-Thanksgiving festivities; the day itself was not as stellar. The amazing dinner also included apples baked for 20 hours, with an amazing creamy sauce that taste like (but did not include) sweetened condensed milk. Also on the menu: salad with maple and brine-soaked peanuts, some kind of squash dish, some kind of fabulous bean dish....some other items I've forgotten. Final verdict: I was completely blown away. Good cooking might as well be witchcraft to me. Last edited by foundpoem; 11-24-2006 at 07:08 PM. |
