Default Are there any gurus out there????

Whenever I visit a blog, one of the things I always do is read the 'About' page. I love to get an idea of the story behind the person writing. On many of the self improvement pages I have read they start with the line 'I am no guru...'. Now this is not a criticism as I am guilty of this myself, but this has left me wondering:

Are there any gurus out there???

This thread is a bit tongue in cheek so I have posted it in Fun & Recreation.

The truth of the matter is that when someone says, "I'm not a guru..." what he or she is actually doing is trying to get someone else to say... "Yes, yes, yes, you are a wonderful Guru and we love you..."

I was curious... I never looked up the definition of guru:

gu·ru
n. pl. gu·rus
1. Hinduism & Tibetan Buddhism A personal spiritual teacher.
2.
a. A teacher and guide in spiritual and philosophical matters.
b. A trusted counselor and adviser; a mentor.
I have to admit, for me, 'guru' has some ominous hocus-pokus to it, when all it is is a teacher.

Here is another definition...

"Guru describes a spiritual teacher or master. A Guru has the power and wisdom to dissolve spiritual ignorance in a disciple. A true Guru has attained a extreme high degree of spiritual development before acting as a Guru.

A traditional Guru has achieved God-realization before starting to teach. Exceptions are, when a Guru starts to teach while his Guru has still a physical body and spiritually supervises and guides him.

In this case he often refers to his Guru when teaching to his disciples. A fully realized Guru having attained God-Union during the present incarnation has no need to refer to anyone else but God, as God is his true Guru and supervisor during his activities while teaching. He acts on behalf of God, never on behave of his personality."

No wonder you don't find them on every street corner...

If we shut up long enough and listened, we'd discover our own gurus are us.
There's a guru lurking in every one of us.

I tried that and almost lost my shirt... so I smartened up and looked up for advice... now, I am happy and financially secure... and not the least bit sorry that I did it...

The wheel already has been invented... no sense in losing time to re-invent it...

Haha... I like that. Maybe I should just come out and say "yes, yes, yes, I am a guru, love me".

My new blog coming soon: Iwillbeyourguru.com.

This is interesting. I actually do use the 'I am not a guru' line on my about page. Makes me wonder if you've read my blog. The reason I say that is to be honest. I don't want people to think I have too high an opinion of myself. I write about self improvement, I'm only 23 and haven't done anything amazing with my life yet, so I think it's important to be humble up front. I also do it because I want to distance myself from the negative stigmas (at least in my mind) of the self help gurus like Tony Robbins.

Hmmm I am a Guru in my own way, I help people around me. I always get compliments. I ask for nothing in return. Someone said I was a better Doctor than the professional one!

But your a Guru too.

Just think of the people you help. think of that. think of how YOU help OTHERS.

You don't have to spout wisewords whilst sat in meditation and fasting on Dry, unleavened bread and spring water, you just have to try and be yourself.

Hope that Tony does not see that... it could ruin his whole day...

I don't think anyone should make any proclamations as to being or not being a guru. Let others decide. It's not always your call.

Asashic;
The best way to help people is to teach them how to help themselves. That way 'you pay it forward.' Then they teach someone and they teach someone...

I'd make a crappy guru. I like my food too much.
Would never get off the ground :-)

I have been called a guru and I have also been called an Old Soul, So I have had to do research to understand what an "old soul" actually is...

some believe that the soul has lived many lives and each one attains wisdom etc... hence the name old soul.... I think it is a budhist belief

I used to have a guru, it lived in my Commodore Amiga computer and it meditated all too often.
