I thought this little observation is a curious and amusing story. I wasn't sure where to put it, so thought here was a good place. Driving home the other day and sitting waiting for the traffic lights to change, I observed a pair of enterprising mynah birds. I really don't like mynah birds because they are a nuisance, spread disease and lice and are just pests, but this pair had a good plan going well. They sat on the traffic poles targeting tall cars such as landcruisers. When one was stopped by the lights, they would swoop down and quickly clean up the car of bugs...external mirrors, sun-visor, carry rack. Well hey, it saves having to waste energy on flying and searching! Wondering if it may turn out to be like the 100th monkey story. Pretty smart, I'd say. |

For thoes of you that dont know the 100 th monkey goes like this , Teach 1 monkey to peal a banana before eating it , that 1 monkey knows , after teaching the 100 th monkey all monkeys ever where know . I think this works through a colicitive conscious some way . On the mynah birds , maby there brains work togher , or maby one saw another getting a bunch of bugs on tall cars stoped for a light and they just coppied each other . desert rat

Either the bigger trucks hit more bugs , or they are going in to areas that have a lot of bugs . I remember a guy telling me kids would come up and steal tools out of his a/c truck while stopped at the light at 7 th ave. and Van Buren in Phoenix . desert rat

Cool story. Yes, that they chose tall cars is smart. Animals have been known to exhibit such intelligent behaviors. Here is one cute example. BBC News - Octopus snatches coconut and runs |
