Default Let talk about our computers

I'm having fun with lets talk about are cats thread I thought I would start a computer thread. I like building fixing and repairing sometimes lol. I like talking to other that have the same interest. We can talk about hardware. builds and what we do with are computer. I'm waiting for a case. this is just a quick cell phone picture to show what I'm up too.

If any one interest I will take some hi quality pictures

No I'm not but I could use as a food processes. I don't do things because they are practical I do things because I can its the geek in me. If I had the money I would get rid of the fan and cool it with liquid nitrogen.

I using my computer to save the planet I hope or it could be turn into skynet. I want the horse power for BOINC I always wanted to be a scientist now I can help the scientists.

Scott

BTW I'm paying for green electricity so my computer dose not add co2 but I know manufacture dose and I feel bad about that. We need to move to a green economy Welcome | Green Party of Canada

You know with the mother board out there in the open and the processor running at many giga hertz all that r.f. energy is let loose with out a case. You run the risk of frying your brain . desert rat

that crossed my mind a few years ago when the broke the gigahertz barrier but I image the risk is lower than a cell phone. I would think most of RF would come from the chip in the cpu and its cover with a metal heat spreader.

My electronics teacher in WWII would go into the radar shack to get bombarded with micro wave to get warmed up in winter and did not think nothing of and everyone in the class was how could you do that but I guess he one of those micro wave are no ionizing its not like your DNA is slice and diced with Gama and beta partials.

um, Scott Hi

Sure, I love learning new things. Sounds like fun...

Only one slight problem: this thread just started &
I'm lost already
I said here before in my Technology thread, that
"Adam & Eve knew more about computers than me"

So is this thread, only for people already in the know?

Grab a cup of tea and sit beside me, sk8joyful. We can look at Scott's hardware together.

I assembled a computer along time ago. I no longer recognize the 'innards' of a computer though. There use to be daughter cards that you sort of plugged into the motherboard (I guess...?), but when I opened my computer up a year ago or so, the video card and sound card seemed like it was built directly into the motherboard. How do you change the bloody things now? Not that I want to change my video or sound card. I'm perfectly happy with my archaic computer as it is.

Like all true geeks, I can take apart, repair, build, and upgrade desktop computers with the best of them. I don't do it anymore, because I've completely lost the patience and the inclination to keep up with the upgrade cycle. No thank you. I've got better things to do with my Saturdays than screw with computers. I use an 8 year old IBM ThinkPad T40 with Ubuntu Linux 10.04 LTS. No upgrading OSes every 6 months, no upgrading laptops every 2 years. I get my machines to where it's not painful to use them, then I leave them the hell alone until something breaks.

I may replace it with a MacBook Air, to cut down seriously on the weight and space requirements. But never will I use another Windows machine.

I have a Compaq Presario V6000 with Win XP, 100 Gig HD, 2 Gigs of ram. It's 4 years old. LOL It still runs like a champ though, never had any viruses or hardware malfunctions. I do take care of it though, so that helps a LOT. Most people don't know how to take care of their computers, they just let them get run down and then toss them and buy a new one. Talk about money down the toilet. LOL

I do want to build a nice "gaming" machine soon. I say "gaming" because apparently that's synonymous with power and capability. Yes I do game a little, but I also do trading which needs multiple monitors, and music production, so I do need some juice. I may not need the fastest processor out there or 8 gigs+ of ram, but hey, what the hell, I want it. LOL That'll keep me immune from upgrading for a while until your "average Joe or Jane" computer gets caught up to the (current) state of the art, which can take half a decade if past performance is any indicator of future progress...

After seeing that "RF"-mentioned here repeatedly, & not knowing what that stood
for, looked it up: Radio-Frequency: OET -- RF Safety FAQ's .

Relative to ionizing-radiation causing 'cancer', that I understand.

But how that relates to the computers we communicate with, is to me about as clear as mud

Anybody wanna explain... go right ahead

I think the wattage of the equpment is the key. Most electronic equpment will emit something , even if shielded, but it is so little to be of any real harm. If the o.p. of this thread layed on top of that mother board for a long time and did not get burned by hot heat sinks , they might get d.n.a. damage , or just have metal parts cut in to them. People worry about cell phones , but the towers put out much more power , but it is way up in the air and not next to your brain. Working out in the AZ sun do more bran damage than any thing else. desert rat
p.s. the thread title is lets talk about computers , there are computers in cell phones and the cell phone towers , so I was talking about computers , in a way .

so the first computer that was actually mine, was my family's used hp pavillion. pre-made, 2001-ish. It was the first computer I ever opened up and worked with. I call it old compy. its is now sitting connected to a tv while I use another pre made. HP pavillion elite HPE. I love this thing. it has everything I could ask for and more. its is named compy. \

ok, this probably belongs in a different thread, than computer...talk.

Relative to what you just said, one quick observation:
it is POWER, plus how CLOSE you are to it:
1. the Sun packs alot of power,
but relative to total population, few people get skin-cancer.
Herewith the question: For protection, what are the rest doing right for evidently we are.
otoh,
God did not design our brain to be a Cell-phone receiver.
and
God did not design our body to be a CAT-scan receiver,
but people willy-nilly accept both. crazy.

No not at all. I put it in fun and rec to help with my social skills. I need a brake from talking about problems and talking about my cat and computer help me feel like I'm getting back to my old self but I don't want to go back totally to the way I was either.

Things have not change that much its still motherboard and daughter card and the hard drives, DVD drive and power supply or all hook up to the motherboard by cables. the slots, connection and cpu socket change every few yeas but the concept is the same. Some motherboard have the video and sound built in but they usually have the slots so you can up grade If you add sound and video cards if you want but I have the sound quality is so good on most motherboard I don't bother withe the cards any more and if your not a game most built in video is fine to. But Boinc is starting to use GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) its the chip inside the video card and its a cpu but processing 3d video graphics.

I'm so happy for you. You learn a new word or should I say acronym. From now on I will write it out in full at least once so every body will have it bit easier but if you still lost most geek or more than happy to explain things.
some acronym are quite a mouthful like MOSFET Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor. I taught my niece to say that when she was 2. Its best to start young. What 2 years old dose not like learn new words. I was a very frustrated kid most adult did not know the answer to my question and gave the wrong answers.

I don't mind if the thread get a little of topic my thinking have never been very linear. There is only 6 degrees of separation between people and I feel the same way about technology after seeing CONNECTIONS on PBS.

I'm typing this post on the computer you in the picture its still on the table as you see I don't know when the case is coming. I got a email saying they have to move some stock from one warehouse to another. But it will take a few days to get all my software loaded. I did have a little problem with driver for the SSD RAID (Solid State hard Drive Redundant Array of Independent Drive)

The slowest part of the computer is the hard drive because it is mechanical and there are two way to improve performance SSD and Raid0 and I'm using them both at the same time for the first time. There are 2 Crucial SSD 64 gigabytes in Raid0 and the computer see it as one 128 gigabyte hard drive.

Scott

You hit the nail on the head its a combination of power and how close you are. That a very intuitive and correct assumption.

I should of used the words radio frequency , and for power efective radited power or e.r.p. Only a real electronics person would teach his kids to use words like field efect , or bi polar transistor at two . You teach them ohms law or i squared r , for voltage loss in a wire also ? Maby when they knew some math ? If the rest of you dont know ohms law is e over i r . e is volts , i is current in amps , r is ohms . desert rat

She never seem to be interest in theory but I taught how to solder when she is older. She is good at math she is an 33 and an accountant not a bookkeeper don't ever say that to her. If is was not for the money she might have become a geneticist. I think my scientific mind did rub of on her.

There are a lot of computer geeks that could go to the store , buy a power supply and install it in a computer , but if you ask one of them to jumper the conector so it turns on and check the differnt voltages with a meter , they have no idea how to do that. desert rat

as you can see the computer is not in the case and I jump start with the end of a spoon or a pen but screwdriver will work. I remember when I was telling everyone that a got a post card and they thought the letter kind which I know that what they would think that but POST stands for power on self test. I hardly ever use post card beep codes are usually enough.

Hey everyone do you notice when you turn your computer on it makes one short beep before the operating system load its POST saying everything is OK with the hardware.

I have not done soldering in a long time but I had a charger base for a cordless phone fall into the cats water over night and it die, the base not the cat its to low of a voltage to hurt. I solder in a new 1N001 power rectifier diode and its working again.

#67 - Question/Answer: Computer POST/Beep Codes - YouTube

PC POST Diagnostic Test Card Motherboard - YouTube

Power Diodes and Half-wave Rectifiers

I really have a bad sense of humor in that when I try to be funny I'm not and when I em I'm not trying to be. when I was writing the post about the charger falling the water and die I was thinking about my cats safety and know other would have the same thought and after I thought it was kind of fun the way I wrote but I never quite know how people will take what I say.

I glad I made some one laugh.

um Scott
Check this out: "Easy to admire the hardware -> great pleasure in life -> a new motherboard -> made out with the girl -> I want a girlfriend but -> but I run back to computers where it is safe -> my cats are girls"

There's context here, right?

Hi Scott,

Never knew that before; but I DID "ask" why they called it post?
answer: "Think of it like the POST-man" <- um, that didn't explain it.

THANKS! for all your enlightening

I feel like Mr. Spock sometimes with my computer laid out on the table. I was thinking a may start a Star Trek thread sometime.

If anyone come across with a better picture of the mnemonic memory circuit from star trek "the city on the edge of forever" let me know.

On your charger and your cat . I helped some people hook up an electric fence. The type you use to keep in cows and horses . Part of it went with in a few inches of another wall . This cat got between the fence and the wall. The electric is high voltage , but low amps. The cat would give a large howl every few secounts when the power hit the cat . After a few minutes it got out, unharmed. desert rat
