| First you have to master the art of self-aggrandizing to build up a imaginary sense of honor and pride that you believe is real and when people don't treat to according to that their really attacking your pride, or you can join a religion.

To become offended, you might interpret something as someone talking down to you, acting better or belittling you or someone you care about. What about someone suggesting they know what you should do with your life? That can offend me. But you don't experience this? Please let me know how you might interpret these things. |

Or if someone suggests they know what I should do with my life - Honestly, I don't know what "should" means. It's this very vapor-like concept in my mind. It's almost meaningless. So if someone thinks they know what I "should" do with my life - that is again pretty much meaningless to me. But regardless of the meaning it has for me, again it's totally fine with me if, when they look at me and my life, they have the experience of a particular concept activating within their mind (for example, a concept that they might refer to with the words "this is what you should do with your life"). It couldn't possibly be a problem for me that a particular concept activated in a mind, somewhere. Quote:

My guess is that OP is a straight white American(British?) adult man. Am I right? If so, I don't know if I have a cure for you. I take offense when people speak badly of a larger group I belong to, like people of the same nation, religion or gender as me. *Nation: I can't help it, as an Estonian I'm patriotic by default (and so take personal offense for anything targeted against the nation, even if it happened 800 years ago) -- I'm not sure how one would go about acquiring patriotism, especially if they're American. *Religion: I actually don't have a proper religion of my own so I take offense for anything targeted against a religion I'm personally cool with. I've defended Christianity, Satanism, paganism, Buddhism, probably others too, as if they were my personal religion. I guess what I'm really offended by is other people's ignorance (about religion, in this case). *Gender: ... even though I'm female I usually (but not always) find it hard to get offended by misogynist "jokes" or just plain misogyny. (I think I've demonstrated all of the above in this post. See taking offense in action!) I might be on to something here: you can take offense if you take things personally, even if you have no reason to (you'll just have to fake it, the offense will feel real). It'll take some practice, but it's totally worth the effort. | |

I crazy love this thread and your question!! You must be cloned and inserted into every Internet forum so you're inability to take offense can somehow spread. I don't remember when I last felt offended, but I can be tempermental so I have considerable experience in being annoyed and being pissed off. If you need help with either, I'm here for you. 1. Mistake your beliefs for your identity, OR 2. Mistake your external qualities for your identity. That can be sexuality, race, gender, nationality, religion, whateva. As long as you attach the idea of Who You Are to something transient and ultimately inconsequential, you'll be finding offense in unnecessary situations in no time. Hope this helps! |

Plays With Life, every thought is an affirmation. Your posts have smileys and humor in them. Is this the kind of thing a person who gets offended would be typing? Would they make posts about how they can't get offended? **** no. They would be making posts about how the News Media is biased and ignorant, how the government is destroying the country, how someone cut them off in traffic, how some race is invading their neighborhood, etc. Come on man, I know you're better than this. You have to act as if and believe. Start focusing on every time you already do get offended, however subtle. Maybe you stub your toe and groan. That's great! Now blame that pain on the a**hole who lives with you. They didn't kiss your toe and make it better? Wtf kind of careless jerk would do this? Get mad. You're entitled to a perfect life and this world sucks, start noticing where and how. Keep a complaint journal and write everything crappy that happened during the day. Did anyone not give you eye contact? What a jerk. Did anyone give you eye contact? Who do they think they are. There's always something wrong and I believe that you can find it. Good luck. I believe in you. Last edited by taylor; 08-06-2011 at 08:22 AM. |
