this might be quite unfair but the first thing I thought of was "you're not good enough" or "you don't do this well enough"...

Same here, it's unfair because my mother also says very nice and motivating things to me. But this is what I could think of at first.

"Are you on drugs?" was my personal favorite. Close runner-ups were "God knows what you're doing in there!" and "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed."

Make no mistake, though, my mother and I get along fine. She's just a bit dramatic.

Being overly protective, my mother once told my brother and I that our cat was 'visiting elderly parents' in CA. She was really hit by a car. Oddly enough neither one of us questioned her at the time. But some years latter when she said the same thing, my brother starts screaming 'Oh my god! The cat is dead!'.

I used to be a bit of a tomboy when i was young and loved climbing. My mother would shout "don't come running to me when you fall and break both your legs" lol

lol,my daughter always climbed, I didnt say that to her, but ran with my arms ready to catch her under the trees and other things she climbed on when she was little, it was a good exercise.

saw this and had to respond-
making statements about the awful things my mother used to say to me is defeating the goal I have for emotional recovery from abusive people

but as a mother I would like to say that I have said things like -

"use protection even if she is on the pill" !!!!!

"you did what ,when ?????"
"don't drink and drive !!!! "

and the list goes on !

having grown up with a very negative abusive mother may have turned me into quite the opposite but my boys are still growing up okay if I may say so myself
