I don't get it. LOL Is this related to someone being full of piss and vinegar? It doesn't make sense to me.

Nope. What is that?

On another note, I'm very happy that the piss would be taken out of me and not on me.
I might never be able to visit Australia otherwise because I'd die laughing.

Hey there....I was married to a Londoner for many years, and obviously he was full of strictly British expressions; many strictly used by Londoners. The London vernacular also includes Cockney rhyming slang (see below). It took a bit of getting used to, but as an American I can say I eventually learned (and even use!) the best of them. Some examples (including 'taking the piss') are:

'Taking the piss' -- as one responder said, it means to make fun of, or ridicule. "Hey Nigel, quit taking the piss and bugger off!"

'Having a slash' -- means to go to the bathroom to urinate. "Excuse me mate, going to have a quick slash."

'Got the hump/ump' -- annoyed, irritated. "Me bird's got the hump." Translated: My girl is annoyed with me. (Londoners often say "me" when they mean "my.")

'Arse about face' -- doing something back to front. "C'mon darlin', you're doing that arse about face."

'Blimey!' -- an expression of surprise. "Blimey, Simon---you taking the piss?"

'Bollocks!" -- this word has many excellent uses. Technically speaking it means testicles but is typically used to describe something that is no good (that's bollocks) or that someone is talking rubbish (he's talking bollocks).

'Have a butchers' -- To have a butchers at something is to have a look. This is a cockney rhyming slang word. The reason "butchers" means a look even though it doesn't rhyme is because it is short for "butchers hook" and "hook" of course, does rhyme.

'**** up' -- means to make a mistake; nothing to do with the male body part. "This is a real **** up, Georgie Boy! No wonder me mates take the piss out of ya?!"

I could go on and on, but I won't. You get the idea. And to you Brits out there---give us some more examples!

Peace.

"take the piss" may be a reference to a related (and dated) idiomatic expression, piss-proud. This is a vulgar pun referring to the morning erections men frequently experience, which have long been popularly attributed to arising from a full bladder, and thus could be considered a "false" erection. In a metaphoric sense, then, someone who is "piss-proud" would suffer from false pride, and taking the piss out of them refers to deflating this false pride

"Crikey" is not a New-Zealander expression. It's meant to be Australian, though aside from Steve Irwin I've never heard it commonly used in everyday speech.

I could be wrong, but I think the saying "taking the piss"actually was introduced by british backpackers travelling in Australia, and australians adopted it?

I could be wrong though?
