I got my first guitar in '63 (Fender Jaguar). I still have it but it is in the shop getting beefed up with some double coil pickups and new pots. I also have a Washburn electric and another Jag (Blacktop) that I just picked up last week. I ran a small analog (reel-to-reel) recording studio from about '83 to '94. I have a ton of outboard gear too numerous to list, plus other instruments. I write and record my own music (hardly anything lately though There is a link below to YouTube where I just uploaded a cheesy music video that I made about 10 years ago, just for kicks. I created it through the local public access TV station, so it was basically no cost (as you will see why I perform all the instruments and vocals on this little song I threw together. As NoJobRob said, good drummers are hard to find, so I used a drum machine (good keyboard players are also scarce YouTube - we will survive seeds |

The R16 is cheap, and perfect for recording at home, at least to my own current needs. It only has 2 "phantom power" inputs though, and many condenser microphones only run with phantom power. So that way, you can only use 2 microphones that need phantom power at once.. but yeah, depending on your gear and need, it's perfect. (These sort of things are much cheaper than mixers.. they're more set for recording, than for using live with lots of built in effects and such) PS. The soundcloud page does mess up the quality of the recording a bit, so you can get ridiculously good quality on your recordings with that recorder as well.. all depending on your gear/room. Quote:

Digging your list of influences Rob. I've been on and off playing bass guitar since I was a teenager. Haven't touched it in about a year. A few of my friends actually had our hands on an awesome drummer (it IS rough to find one that's good without an attitude) and we were jamming weekly, then both of our guitarists had kids and it kinda fizzled. I pulled out my stuff to play a little about 2 months ago, and it turns out my bass and my amp both got messed up in storage or transport during my divorce, so I'm looking at a hefty investment if I want to get back into it. I actually got some bongos in December and am really digging them. I'll probably end up with a djembe soon. Maybe soon I can get a bonfire and a drum circle going in the yard and freak out the neighbors. |

I took up the guitar the summer before first grade, in 1983. My first act was to get "fired" by a classical guitar teacher after one lesson. "This kid wants to play rock music," he told my parents. Six-and-a-half years old, and already a lost soul. I also play bass and drums. Or, I try to play drums. I really do try. The main problem is that I'm sort of bad at them. I posted some recordings at a website I'm doing nothing with. After about 10 years of inactivity, it looks like I'll be handling bass guitar duties in a local indie rock outfit. This will be a new challenge; the last time I played bass for a band, I mostly sawed away with a pick like Lemmy. This gig will be much more melodic. I'll have to leave some space. |

Another old timer player here - got my first guitar when I was 6, which was almost 44 years ago - it was a crappy acoustic, a Winston. It eventually fell completely apart, but I still have the neck somewhere. Got my first electric for X-Mas either in 1969 or '70. Started playing alto sax in the school band in 1972. we also had a piano in the house when I was growing up, and I would play that a little too. My neighbor had a drum set, and I'd get to play that occasionally as well. Started playing guitar a lot more in the late 70s, inspired by the classic blues-based rock bands of the day, and punk rock. Started playing sax in an 'alternative' band in the early 80s, and played a lot of gigs with them, and another band or 2, for the next 10 years or so. Lots of jamming on guitar in various garage bands in that decade as well. I also play bass, and still occasionally play keyboards and drums (for a while in the nineties a drummer friend lent me one of his extra kits, so I played a lot of drums back then - I miss that, I only have some crappy electronic ones now, and some bongos). I occassionally jam with buddies these days, but not as often as I'd like. Mostly just play guitar these days. Don't have any music online, but I got a used digital mini-recording studio not long ago, and hope to have some stuff online one of these days. I'm no pro, but I love to play, and the older I've gotten, the more important music is to me. I play for at least an hour almost every day. |

Just found this. Dimebag Darrell (Pantera, Damageplan) demonstrates how he gets those extremely high harmonic squeals out of his guitar. I always assumed he just used the Digitech whammy pedal. You learn something new every day. It's a shame the greats tend to die young. YouTube - Dimebag Darrell - Squealing lesson |

I'm going to use that squeal thing one of these days. And it's going to annoy the crap out of people because I tend to play with punks, indie rockers, and other people to whom tricks like that are just grating. But being a minor irritant is too much fun to pass up. I need to get something with a locking vibrato setup...something tells me it won't work on my piece-o-crap Danelectro... | |

Oh yes, music is definitely my passion. I couldn't live without it! I play several instruments, but my main instruments are guitars (which I've been playing for 12 years now) and vocals - My newest guitar, an Ibanez AK95 archtop guitar - Takamine EG523SC jumbo acoustic guitar - Yamaha Pacifica 412V electric guitar - Yamaha RBX374 bass guitar - Alhambra 4P classical guitar I also have a couple of other instruments I'm still learning to play. I have a simple M-Audio 49e keyboard, a chromatic harmonica (awesome instrument!) and a violin here. Aand.. In the band I used to man the drums every now and then (I can only do very basic stuff though). I'm in a post-rock band with some friends, but the genre where I feel most at home is jazz I do a lot of work on the computer using digital instruments, but I try to record as much as possible and learn to play new instruments as is needed by my writing. For example, for one song I wrote a harmonica solo, so I decided to learn harmonica so I could record it What can I say |

I am shown here with my alto banjo. I also play bass bagpipes. I learned flute on this James Hall glass flute(below). I also play American Indian flute. (And not bagpipes, but keyboard). Last edited by royster; 11-26-2011 at 12:26 AM. |
