I got asked this recently by a girl I was dating and it totally stumped me! Where would you prefer to live, by the Ocean or, near/on a Mountain? They're both so beautiful, I love the sound of the ocean lapping against the shore, but I also love the magnificent, breathtaking views of mountains! Where would you prefer?? |

I'd like to live closer to a mountain (preferably with some woods near too), mainly because living right on the coast is so vulnerable. I'd love to be within reasonable driving distance of the ocean though.

Oceans are nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live near one, just because I don't want to get blown away by a hurricane. I did live in San Diego for two years and it was wonderful, but the whole darned state threatens to burst into flame every summer. I know you can have bad weather near the mountains as well, but all you have to do in a blizzard is hunker down and wait it out.

Hmmm interesting way of looking at it. When I was asked the question it was more along the lines of what you preferences I had, regardless of any pitfalls. Which do you prefer in terms of beauty, experience, which one would most take your breath away every day? Where would you most feel at peace?

BC stands for British Columbia, Canada, where im from! And yes, I grew up on the side of a mountain, about a 20 minute walk from the ocean, so the answer is I prefer both. If you've ever been to Whistler, a world renowned mountain here in BC, one of their mottoes is "Sea to Sky country", you start off driving along the ocean, along an inlet, with an awesome view, and an hour and a half later your at Whistler, one of the best wintersport mountains in the world. I would recommend it to anyone. I think I even have some pictures from the last time I was up there, I'll try and post them later. |

I definitely favour the ocean over the mountains. The open view of infinity in motion... While I love going to the mountains from time to time, after staying longer than two weeks I always start to feel a bit depressed. Sometimes I have a slight tendency towards claustrophobia (in elevators, for example), perhaps this is the reason why. If I had to live in the mountains, it would have to be at the top... |

I think I like the ocean because of the beach. It would have to be near a nice beach. Mountains are really nice, but to visit and to go camping. There's a lot more to do with the ocean. But there's pros and cons of both, of course.

Ha...see I'm not the only one who is stumped by this question...it's not an easy one to answer! Ok, let me re-phrase - if you had to pick one, and only one, regardless of pitfalls which one would it be? |

There's a place called Kaikoura in New Zealand on the South Island. It's a small town - population 2000 or so - that sits right on the ocean and is surrounded by a ring of snow capped mountains. On a clear day it is one of the most stunning places you could ever hope to see. Turn one way and you've got the mountains... turn the other and you've got the sea! About a mile off shore, the ocean plunges down around 1800 feet into a huge underwater cravasse. The depth here means that lots of sperm whales and humpback whales pass through and it's relatively easy to jump on a tour boat and go out and see them - one of my happiest days travelling in New Zealand. I'd choose ocean over mountains any time I think, but I love diving and dislike oxygen deprivation at height, so I guess I'm biased |

Well, due to climatic change, I would not advise anyone to choose "Ocean". Or at least to buy a house near the house. If you like paying rent, no problem. If the sea is gonna get 6 metres high in 50 years, that's a metre in 10 years or so. Hey, but a metre higher can be hundred of metres inside the land. ! |

The poll is saying ocean and yet most responses are going towards mountains. I voted for ocean as I just love the beauty of the water and to be honest, I've never been afraid to drown, in fact, for me, to drown would be a very peaceful way to go. Travelhappy - that sounds like one beautiful place to live! |

I've lived in Vermont my entire life, so maybe I'm biased, but I'd pick mountains over oceans any day. Beaches are okay I guess, but everything gets all sandy, and I dislike salt water. Besides, if you've never been out on your snowboard at 8 AM with nobody around but you and 3 feet of fresh powder--you don't know what you're missing.

Heck, maybe if I just stay right here in Minnesota, the ocean will just come to me and I won't have to move! | |

I just can't decide! I loved it when I was standing at my destination after a 50 km trek to 16,000 ft. The air up there is so pure and divine. And I loved it when the waves of the arabian sea catch my feet in my undertow. I think I'm that kind of a person who just loves wherever I am. This world is so full of beauty! I just cannot decide! it's like deciding between a blonde and a brunette! |

Redhead! Anyway, I chose Mountain. Oceans can show pure serenity and peace, and give you nice fresh air. They can also show danger though, and being so open they can make you feel vulnerable. Mountains ofcourse present awesome views over the country. Also I imagine that you can see the stars better at night, since there will be less light pollution arround. Mountains will give you fresh air too, especially if there are woods near. They also give you shelter so you might feel more safe. Mountains also can give avalanches and (snow)storms though. I prefer mountains because it provides a place where you can be alone and safe, enjoy the views and see the stars at night, so all in all, more peace, which I value very much. |

Michael...I know it's a bit weird...but for some reason when I was a kid I had an intense fear of drowning. Over time, that fear passed and now, to me, I don't fear it at all, it's strange but I just feel like it would a peaceful way to go!
