My main collection is made up of beetles. Most of those, I purchase or trade for from dealers around the world. Otherwise, I collect any insect species that cross my path (mostly beetles again), occasional arachnids (spiders and scorpions) and fossils. Thought about getting into sea shells but since I live nowhere near the ocean, that would be strictly a mail-order hobby. No thanks.

| EEEK! I'm not letting you anywhere near my head! LOL On topic, I used to want to collect teddy bears; but I didn't want teddy bears that weren't special so I just have a few that special people have given to me over the years. I still have those. I also collect postcards from various places. On the occasional times I have friends who go off somewhere, I ask them to mail me a postcard so I can add it to my collection. I would rather have that then a t-shirt (though I do like t-shirts too). |

I gave up, mostly due to lack of space/justification, but I used to collect frogs - stuffed animals, figurines and the like. It was all started by my sis and her daughters, who got wind of my online persona! |

I have collected many things over the years...I think I am addicted to collecting. Lately my obsession has been dvds...I think I have around 1000 now. Here is a list of other things I collect: *Original comic book and comic strip art (100s of pieces, some of which are almost 100 years old.) * Science Fiction and Horror movie posters, mostly from the 1950s & '60s (lately I've been specializing in Mexican lobby cards) * Vintage lunchboxes (in 2008 I amassed a collection of around 70 lunchboxes) *Books (mostly on comics, illustration, fine art, movies, and music) *Cds/Lps (have around 2000 cds) *Comic books (don't collect them so much these days, but that was what got me started collecting....have about 30 boxes of them) *Guitars & amps (have about 15 guitars and 8 amps...nothing very valuable though...plan to get rid of about a third of them this year, I'm running out of space!) Have a few other musical intruments too, an alto sax, a keyboard, a bass, bongos, etc... *Dinosaur teeth & eggshell fragments (just started collecting these about a year and 1/2 ago) I have a trilobite, which is my oldest piece at about 500 million years old. * Crystals, Geodes and other geological specimens (Also a recent thing for me, don't have a lot but a talbetop full). A small chunk from a meteorite was my most recent addition to that stuff. *Bugs encased in lucite (only have a few, but they are cool! Sounds like Mounds has a great insect collection) * Tiki stuff...just because you can't have enough tacky stuff cluttering up your home! Oh yeah, I collect buttons too...I have an 11 x 14 case full of them. I've got 2 Superman buttons from the 1940s, some Marvel comics buttons from the 1960s, old political buttons...etc. Come to think of it, also have a small collection of Civil War mini balls, and a button from a confederate uniform...been meaning to order a display case for those. And I also have a collection of old gum cards, mostly from the 1960s...not sports stuff though, more cartoon and monster-movie related. Its been so long since I've looked at them, I almost forgot I had them! Last edited by GhostGoat; 01-25-2011 at 03:04 AM. |

I collect cheetahs, but haven't added to this collection in a while. My newest collection is postcards from around the world. I am putting them up on the wall by a map with a pushpin / yarn marking the location they came from. |

An impressive list there, GhostGoat. When do you morph into a Hoarder and find your neighbors coming after you with pitchforks and torches? I'm a casual seeker of old books, especially the ones about fly fishing, largely because I love to haunt the increasingly rare, dusty old bookstores. My favorite is Fisherman's Luck, by Henry van Dyke (1899, Scribner's). No real value, but next best thing to being on a stream. |

But having too much stuff and not enough space is a growing problem for me that I have been dealing with in increments. I don't see myself moving to a bigger place anytime soon, so I do plan to purge a lot of books and dvds soon, to free up more shelf space. And I'm not buying so much stuff these days, especially large objects!

I am beginning to collect scented sachets / scented pouches which are just fabric pouches filled with scented material like potpouri or lavender. I think it's a good thing to collect because it is good for my wellbeing, smelling the scented sachets calms me & also the smell is pleasurable & can sort of put me on a mini-high ^-^ you're meant to keep them in drawers with your clothes but i cary them around with me and interact with them like they are my personal toy, friend, and stress reliever! ![]() I also collect Self Help Books Products ^-^ Last edited by roxyruby; 02-09-2011 at 01:55 PM. |

I collect space. I love freeing up flow in my home, letting go of things, having an empty drawer or shelf (that's like porn for me!), creating systems of movement and removing blockages, discovering ways to have more free space (like reading on my iPod instead of buying physical books). |

Good question! Haven't thought of this in a long time... Because my husband is in the buying & selliing of books and antiques through estates, etc, I've come to see all "collections" as something so temporary that I rarely buy anything for personal collection anymore. Because I spent time in Antarctica, I used to collect Antarctic memorabilia before I met my husband. Now, it's pretty much gone since I know that I have no one to hand anything down to - so I figured, get rid of the stuff now before some stranger does it for me in the future. Today, if anything, I'd have to say I collect books. But, at the end of the day, anything I collect will be a yard-sale or auction lot that some stranger will be pawing through some day. |

I've collected specimen shells for many years. But shells aren't a good subject to make an investment. |

As a kid, I collected comic books, basketball cards, foreign coins, magic the gathering, and star wars cards. I'm thinking of starting a psychologist autograph collection. Freud is pretty pricey, but I have Phillip Zimbardo, and I'm sure I could get some others for free. But one I would really like to do, is collect "occult" stuff. I saw on auction kings they had a vampire killing set. I'd love to have some of the fake lovecraft necronomicon books, and all the stuff that nazi's had when they were into "arcane" knowledge. I know it's all BS though so I'd be paying a premium on crap I don't believe in. |

Well, I'm faced with the dilemma. I've kept all my no huge shell specimens in clear plastic boxes. My no large collection is placed into a showcase of dark glass. I like to take a gander at my shells during a day sometimes. Also I like the collection takes attention of my visitors too. On the other hand, I know i should keep my specimens out off the light. Because shells lose their bright colors by the light of sun, especially the glossy ones. Ask your shelling buddies; and i'm sure everybody of them will say that dude's crazy if he keeps his collection that way. I've noticed some of my older specimens lost their colors noticeably. But the members of family are trying to convince me that nothing changed with my damn shells at all. And so, I have to figure how to keep my ones. 1. Keep it as it is and take joy to see the shells. But they'll lose their colors. 2. Remove they out the showcase to a dark place, to hide them of the light and eyes. In this case they'll keep the colors, but i'll lose a part of my daily joy. 3. Sell the collection and stoping my hobby. But this sounds as i'll sell the piece of myself. OK, probably, this situation causes laughter from many. But I'm past laughter. I was ever thinking to open a new thread with this stuff at the forum.

I wouldn't sell it all. I've considered selling my bug collection and I'm glad I haven't. The nice thing with these hobbies is that you can put it away for a few years and pick up right where you left off. When you sell it, it's gone for good. It's the same with bugs. Light destroys the pigments and you end up with some drab looking stuff. I'm not sure where you are from but there is an excellent cabinet maker in Quebec and plenty in Europe. Those cabinets are designed for these types of collections. What I've done in the past is I keep a few really magnificent specimens on display. I usually pick ones that are really impressive to people who are unfamiliar with these things but are easy to get. For example, I tend to put rhinoceros or stag beetles on display. They look really cool and they're easy to acquire. If they get ruined, no big deal. All of the specimens with sentimental value, rarities or simply less impressive species get put into those cabinets I talked about. Often times, visitors will see the display specimens and then become eager to see the rest. I haven't lost my daily joy with my collection. Sometimes I'll pop in before work and take a look at them. Hope that helps -Tim |

Knock knock! 180 looks out to see Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on his door. 180: At last! 180 places a couple of fake Necronomicons on the coffee table with a crystal skull as a paperweight, lays a small carpet with a blood-red pentagram on the floor, and makes sure the rest of his collection is clearly visible. 180: [opens door] Please, come in. I've been expecting you. Can I offer you a cup of... tea?
