My friend is leaving the UK to move to Austrailia and I want to put together a book of inspirational poems and saying for her. Does anyone have any favourites they would like to share? I'm going to definitely include this one: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” and the Desdirata Max Ehrmann's "Desiderata" and also The Paradoxical Commandments: Anyway, The Paradoxical Commandments - Do It Anyway - Kent M. Keith, Silent Revolution What others would you include?

"Invictus" by William Ernest Henley; 1849-1903 Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find me, unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul. The Psalm of Life by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) Tell me not in mournful numbers, "Life is but an empty dream!" For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; "Dust thou art, to dust returnest," Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow Find us further than to-day. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act -- act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labour and to wait, Also try: "Pretty Good" by Charles Osgood "If" by Rudyard Kipling Hope it's not too late to add those.

I love The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost because it is a reminder to dare to do what few will even dare to think about. I also love To His Coy Mistress and Parable of the Four-Poster because it is a reminder that we are here to live not just waste away. Adrienne |

From the book Masperpieces of Religion Verse Isn't it strange how princes and kings, and clowns that caper in sawdust rings, and common people, like you and me, are builders for eternity? Each is given a list of rules; a shapeless mass; a bag of tools. And each must fashion, ere life is flown, A stumbling block, or a Stepping-Stone. R. Lee Sharpe . |

I have lived. I have danced the dance eternal and walked through a million places. I have seen things beyond thought and thought of things beyond sight. I have walked to the sun and the moon and obeyed the darkness in my head. Let my music shake my soul and carry my mind. I have lived. |

The Little Chap Who Follows Me A careful man I ought to be, A little fellow follows me, I do not dare to go astray For fear he'll go the selfsame way. I cannot once escape his eyes, Whate'er he sees me do, he tries; Like me, he says, he's going to be, The little chap who follows me. He thinks that I am good and fine, Believes in every word of mine The base in me he must not see, The little chap who follows me. I must remember as I go, Through summer's fun and winter's snow, In building for the years to be The little chap who follows me! I actually wrote a blog entry about it.

The great were once as you. They whom men magnify to-day Once groped and blundered on life's way, Were fearful of themselves, and thought By magic was men's greatness wrought. They feared to try what they could do; Yet Fame hath crowned with her success The selfsame gifts that you possess. The great were young as you, Dreaming the very dreams you hold, Longing yet fearing to be bold, Doubting that they themselves possessed The strength and skill for every test, Uncertain of the truths they knew, Not sure that they could stand to fate With all the courage of the great. Then came a day when they Their first bold venture made, Scorning to cry for aid. They dared to stand to fight alone, Took up the gauntlet life had thrown, Charged full-front to the fray, Mastered their fear of self, and then Learned that our great men are but men. Oh, Youth, go forth and do! You, too, to fame may rise; You can be strong and wise. Stand up to life and play the man-- You can if you'll but think you can; The great were once as you. You envy them their proud success? 'Twas won with gifts that you possess. Edgar A. Guest. |

I was heard a poem by someone I worked with, about a looking through a glass, and seeing a man whom turns out to be yourself, and ends with 'the man in glass was only trying to make a better man out of me' or something like it. If anyone knows of it, I'd be grateful

technically not a poem in the normal sense, i found the song 'simple man' by lynyrd skynyrd rather inspiring. good advice to live by, its straightforward and from the heart. Mama told me when I was young Come sit beside me, my only son And listen closely to what I say. And if you do this It will help you some sunny day. Take your time... dont live too fast, Troubles will come and they will pass. Go find a woman and youll find love, And dont forget son, There is someone up above. (chorus) And be a simple kind of man. Be something you love and understand. Be a simple kind of man. Wont you do this for me son, If you can? Forget your lust for the rich mans gold All that you need is in your soul, And you can do this if you try. All that I want for you my son, Is to be satisfied. Boy, dont you worry... youll find yourself. Follow you heart and nothing else. And you can do this if you try. All I want for you my son, Is to be satisfied. |
