"and a '73 Gremlin."

No great loss eh?

Weird thing is, down here, if it hasn't rained for awhile, then it does, everyone DOES drive slow, all going 40 mph in a really tight group, and if anything happens, stomp on the brakes. I feel safer in the fast lane on those days.

I LOVED my Gremlin, LMM!

PEEVE#3 "Painted lines will keep me SAFE!"

When making a left-hand turn, creep out into the intersection. Get yer arse out there! Even if the light turns red, you're legal, and get to make that turn...possibly the person behind you, too.

But OH, NO, not Nelly Blatherstik! She sits BEHIND the white line. Several light cycles can go past...I once planted a garden while waiting for conditions to be safe enough for her to FINALLY TURN LEFT...and no one gets to go. IT'S LEGAL AND SAFE TO GET OUT INTO THE INTERSECTION, PREPARING FOR A LEFT-HAND TURN.

A close runner-up to this...doesn't occur much anymore, but there was a time some people had a habit of leaving one to two car-lentgths in front of them at a stop or turn lane. Their reasoning? "In case terrorists attack, I can get out." The terrorist is the guy in the blue Ford F-150 behind you who is about to put it in 4-wheel drive and do something socially unacceptable. MOVE IT if you see me get out to lock my hubs, Honey!

The irony of PEEVE#3 is: it's illegal for me to pull in front of Nellie-behind-the-white-line and make a bold left turn...but I do it on occasion, just for stress relief. And in the Washington, D.C. area, you need all the relief you can get.

Not an elk, but a bear story...

Back when I worked in a logging town cafe in rural Oregon, one of the local Native guys came in and offered me some bear jerky. I asked how he got it, and he told me he and some of his buddies had gone out bear hunting, which was either illegal, or they just hadn't bothered to get tags, I can't remember. I was impressed. A bear! That's big. How did they manage to take it down?

Turns out they hit it with a pickup truck on the way up the mountain. They hadn't even gotten to their chosen hunting grounds yet, and the darn thing walked right out onto the narrow road and they smacked right into it. It took one bullet to make sure the bear was out of his misery.

"One bullet, huh? That's pretty economical. Think of all the money you saved on ammo."

"Yeah," he said, "but the damn bear totaled the truck."

My #1 peeve: tailgating.

Following too close behind you. In the U.S., if you rear-end someone, it's automatically your fault, because you didn't allow enough space to stop.

The rule I was taught was one car's-length for every 10 miles-per-hour. (Does that roughtly translate 14 KPH?)
People behave differently when they get behind the wheel of a car. As pedestrians we are much more polite. The underlying reason, I believe, is that it's an attack on anothers driving expertise. We wouldn't dream of saying, I'm a much better pedestrian than you, I can weave through people without incident.

The worst driver is the one in front of me...especially if he/she is not going the speed limit. This is why I have torpedoes in the front of my car, ready to shoot anyone who doesn't get out of the way...

So there's two lanes on the on ramp going to the freeway. But all the sheeple line up in one of the lanes. Baaa. Baaaa!

Actually this doesn't drive me crazy, I just get in the second, empty lane and pass all of them. I just think it's odd.

7/11 Conspiracy Theory. More convenient than a 9/11 conspiracy theory. You can find one on any corner 24/7.
