When I was in the youngest years of primary school in Australia, you were still able to cane kids... but I never heard of any kids in my year getting caned, although I heard about it in some of the "older" kids, probably Grade 4 and up! I do remember getting smacked on the hand with the ruler a few times... but that's about it.

I'm not sure when caning became banned, but it must have been sometime in the early 80s, because by the time I was sort of in the middle years of primary school I never heard of anyone getting caned again! It's just something I vaguely remember from my youngest years.
We were given the belt at school. It was a heavy leather belt. The threat of it was enough for me to behave myself. A few of the boys in school saw it as a competition to see who could get belted the most times. I was always afraid when the belt would come out as the teachers used it with such force(only across the palm of the hands) I was glad when it got banned. How barbaric when you think about it. I would kill someone if they subjected my children to that.

Yup. I'd hunt down the person and would beat the **** out of them myself. With my own hands. And maybe a wrecking bar.

I think overall I was very lucky at school! The worst I got was a whack on the hands with a ruler...and it wasn't that hard I don't think my teacher was really into child abuse!
