Default Books' lovers' thread

Since we are all smart people here, why nor share what we are reading? I am sure we can hear about books we've never heard of before.

I go first. I am reading Andrei Platonov's short stories. He is a Russian writer. A great one. He describes the Soviet times in a very romantic manner. His characters are so full of love and humanity that I cannot but ask myself why I did not discover this writer before.

I uh have this weird thing where I read a bunch of books at the same time. I really should stop it, but I can't help myself. Currently reading A course in miracles, Catch 22, Anna Karenina, The keys to the universe, A New Earth, The Book of Awesome, Prometheus Rising, and Eat to Live. I read every day. I have more books I want to add to it, but I've promised myself I'll whittle the shorter ones out first. I don't know why I get urges to re-read something I've read years ago, but I try to follow those urges, because now I'm reading from a different perspective.

I've just re-read Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter. A great novel about an arieliste who has real wings and lives in London. It's not only about having wings and how everyone projects meaning onto the main character, it's about spiritual transformation too. Brilliant, funny and works on so many levels.

I read what feels right in the moment. Have you ever been watching a movie that was interesting but you just couldn't get into it because you were in the mood for a romantic comedy instead of an action flick? I treat books much the same. I read more than one at a time, because I'm very sensitive to emotions. I choose the one that's vibrationally resonating with me at that moment.

I wish I could break this habit and read one thing at a time. I wonder how much time I waste re-reading passages I'd already read the day before. LOL =)

That's a really good thing, though. I remember once, back in high school, I tried reading Mika Waltari's The Roman. I later read it again when I was in university, and I understood it in a number of ways that I hadn't understood it before. I see it in a different light now. This experience can apply to any book that I re-read, and it can be pretty exciting. You can almost think of it as an evaluation of yourself as a person, how far you've come, and even how much further you understand the world as a whole...

I've just recently got back into reading and I'd have to say that I'm loving Nick Hornby as an author. I also like Chuck Palahniuk's earlier works, especially Survivor and Fight Club. I'm in the mood for finding some more good fiction books, books that are well-written and have a good story. Books that are somewhat sophisticated, preferably in plain English, not some kind of weird dialect, because I listen to my books on text-to-speech. I am looking for truly great books that I can somewhat relate to.

I'm reading Worldwalk by Steven Newman, I really like it so far.

I'm also reading To Vietnam with Love: A Travel Guide for the Connoisseur because I'm considering going there in May/June. Since my mother is from Vietnam, sort of a reconnect with my heritage kind of thing. It came to me a few weeks ago that I was making all these travel plans to go to various places, and I have traveled a lot already, but I have pointed avoided my mother's homeland. Anyways, the book is fantastic! More like a book of short essays than a travel guide, to be honest, but it's got addresses and contact information about some of the places/people/sights mentioned so that's awesome.

Also reading a fat load of psych books for my grad program. That's not for pleasure though.

Same here. I normally have 5-10 books on my bedside table. Right now, I have FIFTH MOUNTAIN, YOGA FOR YOUR LIFE, THE UNIVERSE IN A NUTSHELL, 7 HABITS (RE-READ), GETTING THINGS DONE, GET WELL STAY WELL and a couple of others.

I don't know. I can only read one book at a time. Going anymore than that severly weakens my ability to focus on a particular book's topic. Sure, I can read a number of books at once, but I won't be able to fully understand them as I normally would, and the knowledge would simply go through one ear and leave the other...
