Per the discussion in this thread, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I've decided to go ahead and start a book of the month thread where we can read and discuss a work of fiction (or nonfiction, if we so fancy). Is anyone interested, and if so, does anyone have suggestions for our first book? Personally, I've had my eye on The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver for several weeks -- her other book, The Poisonwood Bible, is just fabulous. (ETA: Elizabeth Kostova also has a new book out..!) But I'm not married to that or anything. Last edited by Criseyde; 07-13-2010 at 04:32 PM. |

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo would be marvelous as well since people in the other thread have not read it yet and neither have I. Any Terry Pratchett books would be nice as well

Oh, the only reason I didn't suggest that was because ssandra had already read it. I've read a good bit of Terry Pratchett and didn't care for him too much, actually. I loved Good Omens, but I think that has something to do with the fact that I'm intensely devoted to Neil Gaiman's work. Anyone else? Last edited by Criseyde; 07-13-2010 at 08:31 PM. |

I'm willing to discuss The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo though... I have a zillion things to do this month, so it might even be better for my productivity to not have to read something new Besides... That is one book I wouldn't mind reading again. |

I would be quite interested in this! I don't read as much fiction as I used to (mainly because I've read most of the "good" horror fiction) and I'm willing to try something new! As for book suggestions, I can't think of anything offhand. I've read lots of great books that I would recommend but that doesn't really fit this. -Tim |

My vote is for The Lacuna. Second choice, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I am captivated by the first few pages of The Lacuna. The description and diction that Barbara Kingsolver uses is still brilliant. It looks like it will parallel The Poisonwood Bible in a way that it involves Americans in a different country and follows real events.

How about starting a google group for it? Otherwise we might clog up this forum with suggestions, discussions, polls etc. Or our threads about it might get clogged up in between other threads? (Suggesting this as normal member of the forum, not a mod). |

Well, right now it seems like The Lacuna is #1 (correct me if I'm wrong) so I'm not really sure if we need a poll, if nobody else has any more suggestions. I was thinking we could just use this thread for the discussion as well. A Google group is a nice idea but I think I would forget about it. |

But I'm cool with whatever you guys decide. Do we have an author for this book "The Lacuna"?

| Yep, it's by Barbara Kingsolver. And email updates sound great. I am okay with the Google group, as long as it's a closed/private group, since this is a public forum and my real name is attached to my Google account. Is it okay with everyone if the group is by invite/admin approval only?

You could always create another Google log on that would be private if you would like to avoid a private group.

I have heard good reviews about The Lacuna. And though I seldom read fiction I do value it. I got out of it some time ago because so much that I read in contemporary fiction was drivel to me. So I am looking forward to giving it a go again. I look forward to reading Kingsolver's newest.

I'm really hoping that this Book of the Month thing gets off the ground. Tomorrow is the beginning of a new month and I'm in need of a new book! I have "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", which I was considering starting next. Otherwise, I'm up for anything! -Tim |

I am going to propose something completely different. Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire - this is of course a biography of Bill Gates. But no only. I approached this book with lots of skepticism and finally got to love it. It is a course in LOA and IM. It contains so much information that at times I am wondering how many people wrote it. It is a long book, 400 pages, but it is worth reading.

I was about to make a Google group but just had a way better idea. Why don't we make a social group here? And yes, now seems like a good time to try and kick this off. I'd have done it a few days ago but I've been in the middle of a great transatlantic migration; sorry about that. |
