Have you listened to anything by Yoko Kanno (composer) and Origa (singer)? Origa has a good voice. I'm pretty sure she composes music too, but based on what I heard, I don't like it so much. Too soft and gentle.

Try Shantel. This is a German musician who fell in love with the Balkan music and made some interesting combination of sounds.

Oh, yes, I also remembered about the Balkan Beats - these are some guys that go around Europe and organize Balkan parties. Bets parties I've attended They also released some albums. YouTube - Balkan Beats Express Berlin Just to get an idea

Leonard Cohen is one of the few artists I'll actually listen to because I appreciate their lyrics (otherwise I just listen to music because I like the sound of it). And Jeff Buckley has a beautiful voice.
