Enjoyed it,

I'm quite fond of anything from the 80s being born in 1981, but I sometimes wonder if the 'new romantic's movement's responsible for wussifying men, with songs like "Don't you want me baby", but I don't think David Bowie's responsible (don't think he's a "new romantic")

That's a good point. Bowie was definitely a "an old romantic" as his glam style was copied by pretty much every male "alt" singer in the 80s.

Actually Bowie didn't sing many songs about "love". He didn't sing many songs about anything because he would write tons of poetry, cut up the lines with scissors, rearrange the lines from other lines that had been cut out from previous poems, and then get his lyrics from that (shown here, at the end of the first video):

YouTube - David Bowie: Cracked Actor Part 2/5

YouTube - David Bowie: Cracked Actor Part 3/5

He definitely blurred the boundaries of androgyny, but he could have just about any woman he wanted, just by being himself. Not by begging.

Of course, by the time "Let's Dance" came around, he completely changed because he was tired of not having number 1 hits, so he started following the crowd instead of leading, and most people think Let's Dance was his last significant album, mostly downhill from there, with the exception of a few interesting songs and projects.

As far as the new romantics in general, it's hit or miss. Some of the songs are wussified, some aren't. All I can think of, is the guys singing those songs were sleeping with multiple women around the clock, so maybe the lyrical content isn't all that genuine (to them). In that case, I appreciate the song's production and pretend the lyrics are different.

Whether other people take it at face value, is another story. Maybe that's more info than you wanted but I can't help myself.

Chris Thile is one of my favorite musicians. He's a mandolin player who's a master in pretty much every musical area. Check out these clips... Amazing!

I think he said something about it being hard being a closet hetrosexual, hehe

Oh yeah, I was thinking more of love songs from the 80s than the specific Synth Pop movement, I wonder if some of the lyrics had something to do with aids epidemic and people being less casual.. Not sure.. But sexual energy and creative energy run a parallel path, similar to Steve Pavlina's article about Napolean Hills Chapter on Sex, Love Transmutation in Think and Grow Rich.

I think music branches in two directions the singer songwriter or bands writing thier own songs where the audience feels a part of themselves in the band on stage or the dance / disco / techno / pop direction where the focus is more on the community and everyone being their own star, where the lyrical focus is less important. Like I think Boy George said Karma Cameleon was just a good beat but the lyrics are meaningless garbage...

I guess the two directions can mix and match

It's cool, rock n roll history interests me a lot.. and I need to know everything about it, even though I don't really know it all...

He later said he said that just to be controversial.

Bowie distanced himself from that in a 1983 interview with Rolling Stone, saying his earlier declaration of bisexuality was "the biggest mistake I ever made".[83] In 1993, he made the claim that he had always been a "closet heterosexual", and that his interest in homosexual and bisexual culture was more a product of the times and situation than his own feelings. Bowie stated, "It wasn't something I was comfortable with at all."[84] --that's from wikipedia.

So he might have been bi. He's married to Iman, and has a kid with her, so if he's gay he sure snagged a good beard.

Hmm.... I think that's your own bias in music showing. I don't think "traditional" bands write more "meaningful" lyrics than groups/songwriters who use technology as their instruments. Depeche Mode come to mind... they are all that "direction" but Martin Gore is considered one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

If you're talking about straight-up rave music, sure there is some fluff in there, like anything else. A lot of that is manufactured quickly to be disposed of quickly, like the Jonas Brothers or Brittney Spears.

David Bowie said in a 1972 interview, "I'm gay and always have been, even when I was David Jones." He also said he was trysexual -- "willing to try anything."

yeah he definitely tried both genders, what he liked more I guess only he knows.

I think John Lennon was a trysexual, and it was thought that he experimented with the Beatles' gay manager, (though not known)

I heard that, too -- you know, I'd be surprised to hear about any of the big rock stars from the 60s and 70s who weren't sexually adventurous -- musicians just seem to lead the pack on giving themselves permission to do things that shock everyone else. I love that about them!

Cliff Richards, Michael Jackson and Morrissey (I think) are some non-adventurous musicians I can think of.. lol.. George Harrison became a Hare Krshna.. Brian May from Queen wasn't really a party animal, I'm not sure about what he got up to in the bedroom..

Other than that I think most were adventurous, their lives were travelling the world constantly so theyd have to be.

Rock stars? cool.

I don't really connect with the lyrics of this song, too despondent for me. Still I love this performance. Clapton and Knopfler.

mark knopfler and eric clapton layla live

mmm on second thoughts, too sad for a friday.
