I'm thinking of going on a vacation next month, traveling somewhere for a few weeks and looking for some ideas here! Last time I went backpacking in western Europe, it was fun, but somehow sightseeing the same churches, museums and ruins gets boring. So I'd like to do something different, more exciting this time. Any suggestions on cool things a single guy in his mid 20's can do and in which part of the world?

How about getting inspired by the National Geographic and other high-end adventure vacations? The real ones cost a fortune, but they can be replicated for a fraction of the cost. I saw one that lit me up: kayaking around the bed-and-breakfasts of Crete. |

Thailand? Bangkok and Ayutthaya (previous capital) have lots of historical and cultural things. In Bangkok lots of people your age around Khao Sarn Road. Combine it with nature trips or scuba diving on islands like Koh Chang or Koh Phi Phi. The weather's great, the people very friendly. |

Going to Mexico and/or Guatemala backpacking (at least it will be cheap now). Nature is GREAT there.. Especially if you go down from Acapulco to Cancun. Those 2 places are the ugliest on this route, the rest is extremely beautiful. On the way back you can go up via the center (Chiapas etc). Enjoy!

African safari? My dream destination is India. I would love to spend 3 months wandering around there.

Istanbul is a great suggestion there is so much to see and do there. There is so much history and it is the great cultural meeting point of East and West. It is a big city with plenty of cultural attractions and nightlife.

For me, it so much depends on if my main focus at a certain time is on rest & relaxation, meeting interesting people, learning and seeing new things, adventure, physical movement, plain fun, partying, spiritual inspiration etc etc. Could you describe any more closely what of the above you are most looking for? A beach holiday can be like paradise or boring, Las Vegas exciting or overwhelming, a young cruise a great experience of fun and choice in the moment or a place where you feel lonely and empty in the crowd, taking a class in a different part of the world a great adventure or too much etc. Same for the people you meet: Some travellers would thrive in a place where they come in contact with cultures very different from their own. For others, the greatest experience would be to meet likeminded people. That's why some people take a trip with the Transsibirian and others go on a holiday workshop with PD people from their own country. Just a matter of preference and predominant needs in the moment of planning the holiday. | |
