Default Big Apple Dreamin' (Questions)

"We're so young and pretty, we're so young and clean, so many things that we have never seen"

I've been thinking about this for a while. It's kind of a challenge for me.
I want to go to New York alone but never had the guts. So now I have a month off before school starts and I'm really thinking of going there for a couple of days and just not listen to my fears.
I want to go there without plans. I don't want to waste my time on all the tourist-stuff. I just want to roam the streets and see what the place is like.

Can someone recommend some nice hostels or something like that (cheap) in some nice neighborhood where I can go out on the street without getting killed?
I've never been to the states. What should I know except for tipping?
Some general tips would be just awesome. Should I stay out of the subway? etc.

"Oh, New York, you and me, baby
Waiting to swallow us down,
New York, we're coming see what you're made of
Are you as great as you sound"

I'm not a New Yorker, but I've got friends there and have visited many times. There are definitely bad neighborhoods, but NYC is nothing like the crime-ridden, disgusting Hell-hole it was 25 or 30 years ago. Don't worry about the subways -- some aren't always clean, and you may see your share of wierdos, but I wouldn't fret about your safety. Just use common sense, keep an eye on your stuff, and don't walking around in rough neighborhoods.

The biggest issue for first time visitors to NYC seems to be not getting overwhelmed by the chaos -- people don't take kindly to gawking tourists obstructing the sidewalk. If you're from a large city, or have spent enough time in large cities, this won't apply to you.

Thanks man.

I don't consider myself a tourist. I'm a traveler
I have spent some time in larger cities so I shouldn't have any problems adapting to some chaos.

Of what I've heard/read all of manhattan is pretty safe. That's where I'm gonna spend my time. But like I said I'm going without a plan of stuff I'm gonna see.
