Here's another one. three girls went to a motel and rented a room for 30 $ they each paid 10 $. The owner realized that the price was only 25$ and ordered his slave to return the 5 $. The slave in turn gave one dollar each to the girls and kept the other 2 for donation. Now each of the girls paid 9 $, multiply that by 3 = 27 +2(which the slave had) = 29. What happened to the 1 dollar? |

Also, the 27 and the 2 refer to the situation after all payments have been done while the 30 refers to the situation after the first payment. Equaling total amounts received an paid should be done at the same instant of time.

Try these What is the value of 2006 x 2008 - 2007 x 2007? (no calculators!) How many two digit numbers N have the property that the sum of N and the number formed by reversing the digits of N is a square? |

You rearrange it as 2006 x 2007 - 2007 x 2007 = -2007. Then add the missing 2006 to get the answer of -1. The second one is a bit cumbersome actually.
