Nice thread! Here are some of my favorites on top of my mind that I don't think have been mentioned here yet:
Romantic comedies:
Has anyone watched a movie called "Waking Life"? I've heard so much about it but I haven't been able to watch it yet... |

Also its funny you mention Waking Life (which is an awesome movie) because Ethan Hawke and Julie Delphy, the stars of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, are in Waking Life together. | |

Other movies I love (and which I haven't seen mentioned) are Garden State, the Breakfast Club, the Goonies, the Never Ending Story (i love 80's movies!), the Bridges of Madison County, On a Clear Day, Lost in Translation, Gideon's Daughter, Sense and Sensibility... |

That said, a few of you have weird movies that make you feel better :P Quite a few anime fans here too! I loved the earlier Miyazaki films. Kiki's Delivery Service and Nausica of the Valley of Wind. And I can't believe no-one's mentioned Jerry MacGuire yet! An inspirational story of what happens when one man decides to follow his heart for once, gets fired for it, drops to rock-bottom and has to climb back, all the while doing his best to remain true to his convictions.

Dune One of the main quotes in the movie always got me to stop and think about overcoming fear in my life.... "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

It doesn't seem to be intended as a horror or scary flick; Butterfly Effect, in a way, shows you that you can see the world in a different way. A radically different way. And this perspective can be extraordinarily enlightening.

My favorite movie would have to be The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm talking about the 2003 version with Jim Caviezel. Watching that guy be betrayed like that and go through hell and then seeing him rise and making them pay makes me feel great!

Lots of great films listed here. I'm a little surprised no one mentioned The Day the Earth Stood Still. Yes, it is 55 years old, but still worth the trip. If you haven't seen it, I'm sure you can find it on Netflix, or whatever service you choose. My last blog post, "Well, if it isn't Mr. Burned-Out Cinder" was on it, though my post a spoiler if you haven't seen it.

To make you smile: Office Space i (heart) huckabees What the Bleep Do We Know? (pseduo philosophy, but still very nice) Northfork Anything Monty Python, but especially The Holy Grail (On second thought... let's not go to Camelot. It's a silly place.) O Brother, Where Art Thou? (The modern Odyssyus, cyclops and all) Secretary (and you thought all your relationships were screwed up?) To make you think: Gattaca Matrix Trilogy The Truman Show (yes, Jim Carey gets metaphysical before Eternal Sunshine! Do you really want an interventionalist god? I thought not.) Fight Club (well, duh, isn't this on everybody's list?) Pi Donnie Darko Drama to engage the mind: The Sixth Sense (the cinematography is stunning, look out for the color red ; watch the director's commentary) Requiem for a Dream (it's like a car wreck; you can't look away, speaking of which...) Crash (the recent one detailing racism, not the one where sexy James Spader gets all weird with Rosanna Arquette, although I am partial to kinky stuff...) Intermission Anything that was originally a Philip K Dick story: Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) Minority Report Paycheck Imposter Total Recall (We Can Remember it for You Wholesale) There's another one, but I can't remember the name of it. Artsy Kung Fu movies. What can I say? I love them: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Hero Kung Fu Hustle (because Stephen Chow is tasty, and they are making a KFH2!) House of Flying Daggers The Kill Bill movies

I can't believe I forgot to mention the day the earth stood still!!! I was about 9 years old, and that movie made a great impression on me that carried a strong feeling and longing for years. As well, so did Island of the Blue Dolphins. I even named my dog Rontu. I felt homesick for that Island for years after seeing that movie.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned HERCULES yet : for me it's the greatest animated movie ever made - not just really funny, but the only Disney movie based on Greek mythology - a fable on the cycle of life, brilliantly told! The voices of James Woods and Robert de Niro make it even better - I absolutely love it; so much so that I have written my own little review about it - you can read it here if you want to.

I just got the DVD of The Secret. WOW!!! Very inspiring, and uplifting. I already knew a lot of the concept, but the movie did hold some key tips that will help tweak/tip the universe in my favor. Again, WOW!!!

I've been coming up with a list of movies, lately, that I call 'transcendental' movies. These are movies that I like not just because of story (or in spite of the story) but because they combine music and images so well that they produce in me some kind of meditative state (this may be a very personal reaction on my part). The list so far: The New World (this movie stole my soul away for two hours) The Thin Red Line Solaris (newer version with the Cliff Martinez soundtrack - I love this music) I'm fairly positive that I will be adding The Fountain to this list. It looks like a beautiful movie and it has a Cliff Martinez soundtrack. For movies that just make me happy, pretty much any Studio Ghibli movie works. |

For feel-good flicks, I am a big fan of "sports" movies, a genre which I think is broad enough to include movies like "Akeelah and the Bee". I like them whether they are of the happy ending variety (Akeelah, Hoosiers, etc) or of the almost-but-not-quite variety (Mystery, Alaska, etc). I find it very moving to watch people perform and leave it all out on the field (fight the good fight), whatever the ending. |

Here's my list: 1. Fight Club( every guy should know about this movie) 2. Waking Life (about life, science, and philosophy) 3. City of God (about life and growing up) 4. Vanilla Sky ( about love, friendship, career, choices) 5. The Matrix 6. The Godfather Trilogy (I know its a mobster movie but when you really pay attention to every detail you'll see its not just a mafia movie, its something else) 7. Old School (brings you memories about your younger days, really funny!) 8. Borat! (this guy defines courage in a silly way, from what I can see, hehe) |
