As I sift through my MP3 collection, I realize most of the music I have is pretty heavy stuff, and frankly a bit depressing (mostly alternative). I'm looking out for some lighter music, that is more uplifting and energetic. Any suggestions? |

| I've liked what I've heard so far from Arcade Fire, and ColdPlay is great.. I'll look up the others. Sometimes I find myself using music to take myself out of the present moment, to ruminate about memories both good and bad - but I think it isn't helping me get to a more positive place. I grew up listening to Morrissey and The Smiths - I can barely listen to that anymore because it is just too depressing. PlayLife: Not bad at all. I'll give some of their other stuff a listen. |

Search for Reggae and Ska, I should do that myself... I only have a little of that but it's awesome. Really uplifting stuff. Right now I'm listening to something else though. Ayreon, a mix of metal and eh... well lighter sound. It's epic and thought provoking, inspiring music. Like fantasy, but in musical form. YouTube - Ayreon - Beneath The Waves Then there's Hedningarna, unless you're Finnish you wont understand a word but that doesn't matter, I love it anyway. Modern folkmusic with lots of old instruments. YouTube - Hedningarna - Hoglorfen |

I've always loved U2, Counting Crows, Collective Soul. As I've moved into much mellower stuff I've taken a liking to Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Enigma, Deep Forest. I also greatly enjoy the Metamusic series from Hemi-Sync. |

Dan: I love MGMT! Especially Time to Pretend. There's a strong positive message in it that resonates with me. One of the best song's I've heard is by Jim Offerman, you may have heard of him. I also listen to Vampire Weekend, which tend to play some interesting pieces with hidden meanings. And Lykke Li is another favorite. Her quite voice conjures a whole world of emotion for me. |

Hmmmmm....some good uplifting stuff....I would have to go with some Jack Johnson (YouTube - Jack Johnson Flake) or Donavon Frankenreiter (YouTube - Donavon Frankenreiter - Life, Love & Laughter). Those are a couple of my favorite artists and songs |

This is great - I love sampling the stuff you guys suggested. Some of it I've listened to before, but it's good to be reminded what is out there. One of my favorite songs from one of the best bands ever: Stone Roses - I am the resurrection.. | We seem to have quite a few things in common, when it comes to musical taste! SKM is very, very cool. Here's one you probably haven't heard yet: www.peopleyouknow.net You'll have to ignore the fact that the site is in Dutch and just be sure to check out their song "Dance" in the music player! |

John Butler Trio -- Grand National Lot's of different musical styles, lyrics range from politics, love, carpe diem. Dude plays an accoustic 11 string (he takes the 2nd g string off so he can play lead on it) through fuzz, wah, etc. Lot's of slide guitar and open tunings. Enjoy! |

I'd highly recommend an instrumental rock band called God is an Astronaut. Their official website: ^ GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT ^ You can hear full-length previews of their songs on MySpace: MySpace.com - God Is An Astronaut - Glen of the Downs - Ambient / Rock / Electronica - www.myspace.com/godisanastronaut Another band that I really enjoy is The Protomen. They took an old video game from the 1980s and they made a rock opera about it. The first part of it ends on somewhat of a somber note, but the first part of the second act is easily one of the most inspiring songs I've ever heard. Their official site: THE PROTOMEN "Breaking Out" demo from the second act: YouTube - The Protomen-Breaking Out |

I would suggest Indian instrumental. Listen to Pandit Ravishankar on Sitar, Zakir Hussain on Tabla, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasiya on Flute, Jugalbandi(Competition- i don't know if this the right word) of both Tabla & Flute, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma on Santoor. I bet you will like it. It will not only be pleasant on your ears but also soothing to the soul. The best part is these & other Indian instrumental musics are also created for certain hours during the day & night, seasons etc. I suggest you listen to it atleast once. |
