@starlet: I'm learning Italian, too, because my fiance is Italian. Like your tutor, he loves teaching me swear words and insults, especially in his dialect. Some of the insults are nearly impossible for him to translate, or make very little sense in English, but I agree with you, it's fun! |

I speak Spanish, Catalan, English, French, Modern Greek and some italian. For those who say that Spanish, Portuguese and Italian are almost the same... you've obviously not tried to master them. If you just want to say "hi, what's your name, I'm 30 years old etc" yes, they are quite similar, since they all come from the same language-latin. |

I'm fluent in both English and Dutch (seeing as I was born in the Netherlands). I know a tiny bit of Japanese (through karate) and will be taking a year or two of Spanish next school year. I'm really into languages in general, though, so I would love to know more.

What a great topic! I love languages, and want to learn 10 of them too. But find myself getting frustrated at a certian point in a class room setting. I think I would do alot better in an immersion program, and would like to manifest that with Welsh. I've taken Spanish, Russian and am trying to pick up some Welsh now by listening to BBC.Uk.Wales podcasts and various Cymraeg websites. Its definately a language that would benefit having a native speaker correct you in! |

For having native speakers to correct you - there are many, many language exchange sites - try a few, contact some welsh speakers, and see if any of them are willing to skype with you. For efficient language learning in general - the only way that I'm aware of to do it is on your own, rather than in a classroom setting. Language Learning Forum has a wealth of information on how to do so, as well as pointers to books - I highly recommend "The Art and Science of Learning Languages" (I have no stake in this book; it's merely the best book on language learning that I've ever read). Ardaschir's posts on the aforementioned forum are also a goldmine - he's no longer active on the forum, but he shared quite a lot of the methods that he used to become proficient in a few dozen languages.... | |

I looove languages! Russian is my first, Ukrainian is second and English third. I have also studied German at school (but have forgotten most of it), and I have taken some Spanish classes. I have also started teaching myself Hindi, but haven't gotten past learning the alphabet and some basic phrases. And I would love to learn Japanese. |

Since I lived in Montreal for five years, I have a very basic street knowledge of French (can ask where the washroom is). I'm also about 60 to 70% fluent in Cantonese (street level again) but I've been presently working with a Cantonese coach to completely translate my motivational presentation. I hope to do a speaking tour of Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau and Malaysia with both an English and Cantonese versions of my talks ready to go. The next one will be Mandarin but unlike Cantonese where I already have some background, Mandarin will be starting from scratch. This is be a huge challenge but if I can at least get a short version of my talks learned in Mandarin, it will open up China for me. |

I love learning languages. Well I speak Farsi(Persian) and English fluently and I can understand Arabic and Turkish. Currently I'm taking German courses and also I'm studying Chinese and French on my own. I only use these free resources: Language Learning with Livemocha | Learn a Language Online - Free! Flash cards, vocabulary memorization, and study games | Quizlet Learn Chinese - ????? (Learn Chinese Every Day) |

I have a great passion for languages, but unfortunatelly I live in a small town where it's impossible to take any other language then English, French or Russian. Therefore, I'm trying to master the ones I have at school, but it's quite a shame for me no to have the opportunity to learn Italian or German, especially the first one. |

Hi, I just subscribed to this forum and immediately was intrigued by this discussion because I love language and culture. My boyfriend is Brazilian and I have been learning Portuguese for years now! I am conversational now, but I know when we live there, I will become fluent pretty quick. Does anyone here also love Portuguese? Maybe we can practice with each other! |
