Where are you now? Are there any limits as to travel time, distance, cost etc?

I guess it depends on what you like doing, but the smaller towns of The Netherlands have an appeal for me. Love the culture, food and overall atmosphere.

Well I guess it all depends on what you're looking for in a vacation. Do you want to spend time on the beach and relax? Or are you looking for a place to soak up some culture? Maybe a combination of the two? Or something else entirely?

Scott Bird: which towns have you visited? and which food are you such a fan of?
I am always told that we Dutch lack a cuisine, hence my curiosity!

A trek through the Moroccan desert! On foot or by jeep and sleeping in tents. I've done it twice, it's gorgeous.

Thanks for all the replies!

I'd rather be doing stuff and as Kimberly put it "soak up" some culture. Beaches are also fine but I don't want to be bumming on the beach the whole trip.

Come to Singapore heh heh. You can soak up 4 different cultures from the 4 different races here! Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian (I guess the previous 3 should intrigue you more?)

So will Singapore have two more distinguised visitors soon? haha

No I don't work in the tourism board. I blog on this fabulous site - Love and Marriage | Dating & Relationships: Kloudiia’s Kit: Dating Affairs

As a matter of fact, I live in a small Dutch town, so it's not that special for me. About the cuisine, In restaurants it's a mix of other cuisines, we don't really have dishes we're proud off, except maybe soused herring

Hi Kim,

I guess Leiden is my favourite (although it isn't that small), but I also enjoyed Edam (during the non-tourist times) and Hoorn. Wandering around small picturesque towns during their quiet periods is my idea of relaxation.

In terms of food, as I generally eat pretty healthy stuff at home I tend to snack on other things whilst travelling - especially the very finely sliced potato fries which seem to be widely available at markets in Amsterdam. I also tried a lot of cheese, which is something I rarely eat at home.

The other side of this is breakfast, which tended to be a little more on the health-conscious side as it had to keep me going for a while. Fresh fruit, yoghurt and seafood - a little more substantial (and tasty!) than the usual cereal and toast I have most days of the year.

I agree; Hoorn is beautiful and I used to live in Leiden myself, so I'm biased with regards to that one. I've never been to Edam but I was in Volendam which is just right around the corner from there.

The potato fries - did you eat them with mayonaise (the real dutch way? )

Try Spain; it's a beautiful country and has a lot to offer.

I was actually thinking about Volendam just after I hit 'submit'. Certainly worth adding to the list. As for the fries, definitely with mayonaise. Is there any other way?

A few more places I've enjoyed (elsewhere in the world) :

Israel in general, though Jerusalem has enough to keep you going for many years
Romania - particularly parts of Wallachia
Slovakia - once again, the smaller towns held more appeal for me
Turkey, particularly Istanbul (whilst I generally keep away from major cities, Istanbul is a definite exception)
Lapland - where else would you want to be at this time of year?

Go to Thailand - great destination. I'm going for a 5-week trip in February.

Yes there is good reason I choose to currently live and work in Thailand.

The other place to go that I really enjoyed is Cambodia:
Overland From Bangkok to Phnom Penh

And my Blog on living in Thailand:
Living In Thailand As A 7ft Giant

The other places I have been that I am definitely going to travel back to are;
Poland
Lithuania

I love Prague during the Christmas season-- although if you're a vegetarian you may want to avoid it due to the carnage of the carp being cut up for Christmas dinners. But if you get a light snow it is really a magical city in the winter-- and all of the Christmas decorations made with Bohemian glass, the Christmas market set up in old town square, the hot mulled wine being sold on the streets...

Okay, I'm getting misty-eyed here! Time to break out the Czech Christmas carol collection!
