Where are you now? Are there any limits as to travel time, distance, cost etc? I guess it depends on what you like doing, but the smaller towns of The Netherlands have an appeal for me. Love the culture, food and overall atmosphere. |

I am always told that we Dutch lack a cuisine, hence my curiosity!

I guess Leiden is my favourite (although it isn't that small), but I also enjoyed Edam (during the non-tourist times) and Hoorn. Wandering around small picturesque towns during their quiet periods is my idea of relaxation. In terms of food, as I generally eat pretty healthy stuff at home I tend to snack on other things whilst travelling - especially the very finely sliced potato fries which seem to be widely available at markets in Amsterdam. I also tried a lot of cheese, which is something I rarely eat at home. The other side of this is breakfast, which tended to be a little more on the health-conscious side as it had to keep me going for a while. Fresh fruit, yoghurt and seafood - a little more substantial (and tasty!) than the usual cereal and toast I have most days of the year.

I agree; Hoorn is beautiful and I used to live in Leiden myself, so I'm biased with regards to that one. I've never been to Edam but I was in Volendam which is just right around the corner from there. The potato fries - did you eat them with mayonaise (the real dutch way? Quote:

A few more places I've enjoyed (elsewhere in the world) : Israel in general, though Jerusalem has enough to keep you going for many years Romania - particularly parts of Wallachia Slovakia - once again, the smaller towns held more appeal for me Turkey, particularly Istanbul (whilst I generally keep away from major cities, Istanbul is a definite exception) Lapland - where else would you want to be at this time of year?

I love Prague during the Christmas season-- although if you're a vegetarian you may want to avoid it due to the carnage of the carp being cut up for Christmas dinners. But if you get a light snow it is really a magical city in the winter-- and all of the Christmas decorations made with Bohemian glass, the Christmas market set up in old town square, the hot mulled wine being sold on the streets... Okay, I'm getting misty-eyed here! Time to break out the Czech Christmas carol collection! |
