Default Where would you live?

I've finally finished the current phase of my life - college. I have two final exams tomorrow and then I'm through. On to the next thing, whatever that is. I'm not really sure what I want to do (I know I want to do computer programming work, but nothing much more specific than that) or where I want to go.

I don't really have anything tying me down to any specific location, I feel free to go anywhere in the world to try and settle in -- or not, maybe just stay for a short period of time and move on... My degree is in Computer Science, so as long as I can have good quality internet access, and maybe chances at finding programming work, I'm set.

What are your favorite locations in the world? Where would you go and why?

I feel that moving to any certain place because of the landscape or geographical items of interest is a mistake. Before too long that feature looses its interest.
Move somewhere because of the people, I think Canada or here in Australia.

Except for the ocean. I don't think I'd be able to live somewhere where I couldn't see the ocean regularly.

Haha, I have grown up in he middle of Sweden and have only seen ocean on vacations. I don't think I'm much of an ocean person. I'm more of a mountain person. There are no mountains where I grew up either but I've been on vacations at mountains and like skiing. I can also see much more variety potential in mountains than water.

I am somewhat hung up on being near ocean myself, but I'm trying to be open-minded. I don't want to miss out on something great just because there's no beach close by.

I can hardly call the English Channel an ocean, but having always lived very near the sea (and had a swim today despite it still being very cold!), I could never live anywhere else. David

I've always wanted to live in Italy. Tuscany in particular. It's so open and beautiful there. But you should go whereever your heart leads you. Computers are everywhere. I'd say close your eyes and take a chance.

You may be able to join me and a couple others on the forum who plan on jumping around the globe to experience the world! I'm 21 in June, but age isn't important. We've got a programmer (the other) and a web developer (me) currently! They might see this post and speak up, but I won't talk for them!

I'm doing Canada this summer, then it's off maybe to Costa Rica, then some of Europe, maybe a couple Asian countries, and then New Zealand!

We don't know what we want yet, so we're just gonna go find it!

If you are a programmer then Bay area is the spot. But generally i don't see any spot on the world as special, anywhere you go if you have enough money is good. Personally i don't plan on staying on one spot, i will prob share the living between Europe, Australia, Asia and South/Central America. Teleworking today makes the miracles!

If you have nothing against cold you could choose Iceland...

John Carlin on why Iceland has the happiest people on earth | World news | The Observer

Only i don't know the visa system for them, but i'm sure they are desperate about new IT professionals.

Gee, would that "other" be me perhaps, Dave?
Heck yeah, it will be awesome. Anyone who wants to join, come along.

I had been keeping an eye on this thread to get ideas for interesting places to go! When you can go anywhere, the only limit is imagination.

This artical had at me at

There are plenty of other, more obvious factors. Statistics abound. It is the country with the sixth highest GDP per capita in the world; where people buy the most books; where life expectancy for men is the highest in the world, and not far behind for women; it's the only country in Nato with no armed forces (they were banned 700 years ago); the highest ratio of mobile telephones to population; the fastest-expanding banking system in the world; rocketing export business; crystal-pure air; hot water delivered to all Icelandic households straight from the earth's volcanic bowels; and so on and so forth.
The place that sells the highest books per capita is after my own heart

Great article.

Good call Adding iceland to the List Dave!

Thailand sounds fun, as does the Philippines. I was actually thinking about pitching Thailand to you early this morning.. What about Fuji?

To the orginal Poster, Eric
If i can go anywhere, i would go everywhere. I dont think i would be happy just staying in one place for a long period of time.
I could see myself in a couple places for maybe a whole year becuase there is so much to explore but ultimately, i like to be pretty transient at least at this stage of my life.

I want to go to Peru and all over south america and Africa to explore, see ruins, white water raft, hike and explore.
I want to see eastern Europe and spend some time learning more about eastern cultures.
I want to spend sometime in a bunch of small countryside villas all over western Europe.

That may not be much help, but i found for me, i need to be on the move. Why limit your self to one place when you can go anywhere?
About a year ago, i was struggling with the same questions you are. I can go anywhere, so do i want to go to? I did alot of research and found alot of places that i wanted to go, but none that i knew i wanted to stay. I was actually getting very frustrated with this.
I kept working at it, and into my Life strode Dave, and everything just fell into place. I got a travel partner who wants to do alot of the same things i want to. And he is soooo not boring. (tho if anyone tells Dave i said that, i will deny it )
Good luck on trying to figure it out.
Adrienne

Raleigh, North Carolina...Computer geek capital of the world, aside from Geek Mecca (ie: Silcone Valley and environs.)

Great weather, excellent fun things. Two hours from the beach. Tax dollars well spent. Fair housing prices. Beyond excellent schools. Dozen or so universities. Stanley Cup winning hockey team.

IBM, Cisco, Nortel, Verizon, GlaxoSmithKline, Lenovo, RTI International, Quintiles, SAS Institute, Red Hat, Cotton Incorporated, Epic Games, Duke Medical Center, RBC Centura...I got tired of typing....

See you soon!
