Talking Are you a Disney/animation nut like me?

Even though I'm nearly 30 I still absolutely love Disney/animation films. To me, modern animations these days are better than films with real actors/actresses.

What are your favorite ones? Here are a list of mine...

Aladdin (1992)
The Lion King (1994)
Toy Story (1995)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
James and the Giant Peach (1996)
Space Jam (1996)
Hercules (1997)
Antz (1998)
A Bug's Life (1998)
Mulan (1998)
Tarzan (1999)
Toy Story 2 (1999)
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Shrek (2001)
Ice Age (2002)
Lilo & Stitch (2002)
Finding Nemo (2003)
Shrek 2 (2004)
Ice Age 2
Over the Hedge
Open Season
Cars

I think there should be a fourth choice in the poll: I like some cartoons, because that is the answer that that I would have given. Some cartoons such as Cars, Fantasia, Wallace And Gromit, Chicken Run and Corpse Bride (technically, some of those aren't cartoons, I know), are fun and enjoyable. Others such as Shark Tale, and most Anime are, IMHO, so bad as to be almost unwatchable.

Sorry Amit, Studio Ghibli's movies push Disney's off the list for me

I'm an animation fiend... but I like old school (and yes, Studio Ghibli).

The Last Unicorn, Secret of Nimh, Unico, Mr. Rossi (has anybody except for me ever seen Mr. Rossi??!?!), and naturally as a kid I was all over Aladdin and the Little Mermaid. The animation in 101 Dalmations, the original one, is to die for. I loved Lilo and Stitch. And as far as TV goes, Avatar kicks butt, and I had a thing with Teen Titans, too, lol.

One is never too old for animation.

Oh no Amit, I can't believe this, you're missing out on so much!

Studio Ghibli has been called the Disney of Asia...I think they've gone way over Disney but that's me

This is a great fan site for you to start out from:

The Hayao Miyazaki Web // Nausicaa.net

I'd recommend you run, not walk, to the nearest place you can and get your hands on some of the classics, Kiki's Delivery Service, Totoro, Laputa. If you love animation and the fine art of story telling, you'll love these, they have brought so much joy and wonder into my own life

an animation lover who hasn't seen any studio Ghibli... I too LOVE!! the disney movies, but when it comes to emotion nothing beats Ghibli, i have heard the 'disney of asia' thing but i also heard that Hayao was quite upset with that and thinks the work of Ghibli is not comparable. (at least thats what i remember thinking when i read about it)
some has come to western cinema like Spirited away, and maybe Princess mononoke(not sure on that) but i haven't seen one Ghibli film that i wouldn't recommend,
Nausicaa was my introduction to this mastery and Grave of the fireflies is my favourite for bringing the emotions out.
but go see them all they are great.

I don't like Disney animations because it doesn't give me what I wanted to see.

I prefer to watch anime. Some of them are sophisticated, some are for children, but there is something for everyone. Some of my favorite anime are in the cyberpunk genre. Some of them are classic animations like Ghost In The Shell(a decade old now).

Modern animation work in America are in my opinion, ugly. They used too much 3d. They should have limit their excessive use of 3d.

Hehe I'm 28 and most of my DVD collection is cartoons, kids films and anime They're just so fun and relaxing to watch, I love them.

Studio Ghibli films are definately my favourite, I have most of them already and just need to get the English version of Totoro to complete my collection. "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Whisper of the Heart" are my two favourites, Miyazaki is a true film-making artist.

My fav. movies are :
1. Monsters, Inc.
2. A Bugs life
3. Finding Nemo
4. Ice age
5. Toy Story 1 & 2

By the way...I'm 22 years.

I love the classic Disney movies, I'm not so keen on the newer ones. I don't know if this is because I was older when I saw the newer ones or if they're just not as good.

My favourites are The Little Mermaid, Aladin, Beauty and the Beast, and the classic Winnie the Poohs.

I think it depends on the movie. I'm not a fan of a lot of the Elton John soundtrack Disney movies after Lion King.

Thumbs up Amit, you rock as always...

Amit, fancy meeting you here and another thing we have in common. I love animation, put almost anything in a cartoon and I will watch it. I don’t think I spend a day without watching some sort of animation.

BTW, I have watched every movie on your list except two, and as for the Studio Ghibli movies, dear God my friend, that is cartoon heaven. I will watch everything studio Ghibli including the DVD extras. One of my life goals is to own everything Hayao Miyazaki has made. And stuff from everyone who studied under him. If it comes out of studio Ghibli I want it. “Spirited Away” was my first SG movie and it is my favorite but I love them all so much.

elainevdw, Avatar, is simply one of the best cartoons ever, and I know cartoons. I have watched every episode of season one and two, and I have put the dvd on my christmas gift list.

Royce_aus, when I watched Grave of the Fireflies, I had no clue what the movie was about, even I could not imagine how emotional I got, watching that movie.

Amit, I love this post, thanks for reminding me and showing me that I am not the only one that feels this way about cartoons.

Tell me what is it that makes you love them so much? I finally discovered what it was for me sometime last year.

Cheers

Ooooooooh good question!! I'm not even quite sure, but I'll definitely say that I'm a big kid at heart, my former partner and I loved the disney animations and we used to watch them all the time and we pretty much memorized the script of Finding Nemo. Seriously...I'm just a mahooosive kid at heart!

Spirited Away is by far my favorite, the entire movie is flawless, the story is enchanting and you will be mesmerized by the attention to detail. Most people say watch the Japanese with subtitles but the English version is just as good. I watched the English version first then a couple years later I watched the Japanese.

After watching this movie, I must have watched everything Studio Ghibli made within two months, I love them all but this movie, I watch at least twice a year.

Later A.

Hello,

I highly recommend Princess Mononoke. Great story, stunning animation (as usual) and an epic, beautiful soundtrack.

I'd actually recommend the older ones more than the newer.

Amit, absolutely, the classic My Neighbor Totoro to start you off. After that, the treasure chest is wide open for you to choose from

Amit, you can start with pretty much anyone of the Studio Ghilbli movies except Grave of the Fireflies, save that one for later. I say it doesn't matter where you start you will end up watching them all over and over.

Cheers
