I wonder if this discussion would veer dangerously close to being just plain banal, but hey.

What are, in your opinion and experience, the nicest places to live in the United States? I'm form a completely different part of the world, so excuse my extreme naivety. :p

Are tiny towns really dead and humdrum and full of retirees? Is the city generally livelier than the boonies not only in terms of nightlife but of the presence of conscious, motivated people? Is it really tough to have enlightening conversation with people in the Bible Belt? What places are picturesque? Are people in the East Coast really snappy and cold— is eye contact with a stranger walking the streets of Boston really kind of rude and invasive? What is "Southern Hospitality" exactly? ...What's the deal with Texas?

What's it like where you live?

Apologies if it seems like I'm just painting wild caricatures. Americans are almost fairytalesque creatures seen from here. ;)

Lavon Affair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavon_Affair)

*1954 - The Lavon Affair*

Israel sent operatives into Egypt to bomb post offices, theaters, and *British and US institutions* to prevent British military withdraw from the Suez canal. Their goal was to blame the bombings on Muslim extremists.

The only reason we know the truth about this event is because some of the operatives were caught.

Here's a recent (unapologetic) article in Haaretz on the event: MI figures out what went wrong in Lavon affair - 55 years later - Haaretz - Israel News (http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1127384.html)

Is Israel really an ally of the US?

I thought I would post this and you guys can let me know if I'm being stupid. There's a new poll on facebook which says something like: "Do you think that the Obama's are right in having a 'Holiday Tree' in front of the White House and not a Christmas Tree?" Smelling manure, I went and checked the White House website and they refute the "Holiday Tree" email. Going further, I checked Snopes and FactCheck and, sure enough, they refute the claim as well.
I responded to the quiz in the comment section: "Anyone can create these polls, and I think the person that posted this one is misinformed. A simple check on other websites would tell you that this claim is wrong."
Not only was my comment posted, but another comment showed up stating: "Obama admits to being a Muslim. Things are only going to get worse."
I responded to that comment in the same way, with a reminder to go on FactCheck, Snopes, or any other website like it and one would find that these claims are simply not true.
My posts were deleted by the person who sent me the quiz and the other person's posts stayed.

I guess I can simply give up on this poster, but this seems to be a problem everywhere in the online world. People do not like to be told that they are wrong. Period. They give opinions, back them up with nonsense, and they accept that as their truth. If someone holds a differing opinion, just dismiss it because it can't possibly be right even though it can be backed up with fact.

For example, if I say "Obama is a US citizen", this can be checked to see whether or not it is a fact.

But if I say "Obama's healthcare plan sucks", this is an opinion and could be a very fun debate. Just because my opinion is different from someone else's does not mean that I should not listen to what they have to say, or they in turn dismiss me because I don't like the healthcare plan. Sometimes, you can learn alot by listening to someone who has a completely different view of the world than you. Why not give it a shot?

Just my thoughts, but I hope others, especially in this forum, enjoy being challenged from time to time.

Today what we hear about US is just bad news too.
We have pointed out the contradictions of its politics and history.

But we also should point out the better side.

For me, the better side of US is American people.
There are great people there.

The FBI had an ongoing investigation into the radical Islamist U.S. Army Major who opened fire on his own soldiers last week at Fort Hood, Texas.

Why were they not able to prevent the killing of 13 American soldiers?

Why is no one calling this for what it is, terrorism?

Is 'political correctness' preventing us from being smart and protecting ourselves?

How many more like the Major are there imbedded in our society?

This was a radical Islamic terrorist attack - the Major's Islamic beliefs trumped his sworn duty to the U.S. Army, and he acted out with death.

He is now praised by Muslim clerics as a hero, standing up for Islam: U.S.-born Muslim cleric praises Fort Hood jihadist - Jihad Watch (http://www.jihadwatch.org/2009/11/us-born-muslim-cleric-praises-fort-hood-jihadist.html)

"Nidal opened fire on soldiers who were on their way to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan," Awlaki said. "How can there be any dispute about the virtue of what he has done?"

"In fact the only way a Muslim could Islamically justify serving as a soldier in the U.S. army is if his intention is to follow the footsteps of men like Nidal."....

I am sure this is an impossible thing to accomplish, but wouldn't it be cool, and solve most of the world's problems?

Split everyone up according to what they believe and how they view things. Basically put like minded people together on the same continent (or island).

Put all the Republicans on one continent. Put the Democrats on another. Put the people who want nothing to do with politics on another. Then you could further divide those by religions and lifestyle. So lets say you are a Gay Democrat Pagan, you can go live with the other Gay Democrat Pagans.

This sounds like a perfect solution to me, and I'd be all for it! :D
